So got to the last sealing ring and saw some significant wear. It had actually lapped over the the crank a bit. So should I replace this ring? I am concerned if I replace it the new ring won't match the wear in the block. If I don't I am worried about the wear, play, and it binding or not sealing very well. What ya guys think?

Thanks Tex, I know it's weird how it looks in the pics. I took these pics today with a different phone. They are smooth I cannot feel anything running my fingernail across them. I have also taken a plastic pick and slide it across them and nothing. The thing that concerns me are the brown streaks. I cannot feel them but wonder if I should use some crocus cloth and shine them up.

its common practice to either scotch brite or use croakus(emory) cloth on these journals i use 800 grit every time however the brown will not hurt a thing glad it was not what it looked like

Thanks Tex, funny you mentioned that, I just tried a the finest Scotch Brite I could find (White) It lightened the brown streaks just a tad. I am going to lightly try some light grey or green to see how that does. I always just used emory cloth when rebuilding small engines but man with this gal and the RPMs they reach I want to smooth them enough but be the least intrusive as possible.

not to worry you got this i remember my first rebuild i was no stranger to mercury v6's but never rebuilt one Tommy warren showed me how to do it and of course he held my hand all the way through it. I had years of experience rebuilding repairing tricking out merc lower units but when he dropped this in my lap it rung my bell and has dinged pretty much ever since. 101 is clean, clean, clean next is common sense if it looks suspect its already done, boat related expenses are not for the economy minded folks trying to make a drinking, fishing, drag boat come in the same wrapper!! and good, cheap and fast never shows up in the same sentence just my .02

Thanks Tex, I appreciate the help and everyone's input. I am taking my time, clean clean clean, and triple checking my double checks. I have learned a ton, enjoyed the work, and received some great advice. One of the best pieces of advice I got was the James Perry recommendation from you and many others. Like Merc 2.5 said about my block, don't worry you are in great hands with James.

Waiting on machine work I literally in less than 10 minutes with the finest Scotch Brite pad material shined up the crank rod journals. Then I lapped the reed cages and installed the new Chris Carson reeds. Lapping was a neat process. I know it's 101 for a lot of you guys, but seeing the difference in the deck heights was revealing. Once the lapping was done everything met perfect. My old reeds were cracked and chipped all over. Yet the ole ProMax seemed to run really good. I cannot wait to feel the giddy-up the gal will have!
