25’ boat in 8’ waves in Lake Erie
Don’t think I posted this before....
The wifes 25’ Checkmate coming home from Middle Bass Island in Lake Erie last fall.
We were pushing questionable weather to do this trip at all.
We we made it there between storms Friday and then made runs out/back from their harbor Saturday.
A great weekend including a run into Canadian water and a stop on North Bass Island for my first time.
We awoke on the boats Sunday morning...,to crap.
We ran home Sunday, about 10 miles in 8’ waves.
I knew it was going to be bad and thought I could preoccupy my wife by having her video our trip.
Didnt work.
Late in the video there are two waves that you can count seconds from the time the boat drops off the crest/top of the wave before landing in the trough/bottom after it.
Enjoy.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

If you only had to travel 10 miles maybe you should have waited for things to calm down, This is an example of why so many Wives do not like Boating.

Boated up there all my life.
Im not the average idiot.
It was **** all day Sunday.
“To wait on things to calm down”, would have meant spending the night and all of us missing work Monday.
It was **** Sunday morning when we woke up and it was **** when we left 12 hrs later.
After renting a golf and exploring the island for the day while we hoped it calmed down.
The wife was ready to go the next weekend. She sounded worse than she was.
She trusts me and knows I know what the fk I’m doing.
She will tell you, “this is the reason why I love it up there”.
Been across that lake in a 19’ cuddy and the 36’ aft cabin we just sold.
I know more than you think you do.
Lake Erie is shallow and conditions are controlled by the wind. If it’s blowin it’s rolling.
Greg, she started filming right as we were leaving harbor and coming on plane. Semi sheltered due to local islands.
I have a similar video (4 yrs ago) of us crossing in 5’ - 6’s in our old 22’ Formula.

Sorry if I offended you Mr. Instagator, I must have missunderstood the sounds your Lady was making in the video. P.S. I’ve also boated the Great Lakes for 30 years including the temperamental Lk.Erie, My Wife and I Honeymooned at PutIn Bay 26 years ago on my 270 Sundancer, it was ruff coming out of DEtroit River so we overnighted at I believe it was Erie Harbor just past the Nuke plant. We have had several boats since then and we still take it easy in bad conditions.

I will admit that was a fairly high risk trip but after weighing the situation (looking at lake/waves from every vantage point while on golf cart etc) I made the decision to go.
Our friends left ahead of us in their 25’ Searay cruiser against my advice of waiting/hoping conditions would settle.
I think due to his lesser experience in those conditions and maybe showing fear to his wife......, they had a way worse trip than we did even though conditions were the same.
In my first 20 yrs of life/boating w/the parents on their cruiser, in those waters, the old man never showed fear in the many storms we endured and I never forgot that.
Tinman2 is right in that many women/wives/girlfriends have been permanently scared off by “idiots” that should have never gone out. I have physically prevented them before.
Many, many stories of idiots out in boats/conditions they shouldn’t have.
My saying is, “I want to be the weak link”.
In other words, if “I” decide to put myself and my crew in those conditions (I fully understand that HUGE responsibility!) and am comfortable that I have the skills/abilities to get us home safe, I am confident my boat (it’s motor, rigging, safety equip) are in good enough condition to get us home safely.
(my wife wanted this boat so I wasn’t in the shop all the time working on the other one. She bitched when I spent 2 wks working on this one. I’ve seen too much stuff to trust someone else’s work until I go through it myself. Especially on Lake Erie)
I always have a couple of Trump cards if needed.
#1. I carry a ditch bag. It is a $40. Walmart 2 man inflatable, (oars, and pump) all in a single duffel bag.
**** hits the fan, grab life vests, that duffle bag before going over the side. Pending water temps, we now have plenty of time to inflate the dinghy.
#2. There are islands all over that area, I have no problem putting my boat on the beach to protect my crew.
#3. Have installed the VHF radio in the new boat but not the GPS/chart plotter yet but will for spring.
The newer radios can communicate with the GPS and w/the push of one button (on your way over the side) the radio broadcasts a “May Day” w/latitude and longitude.
We were discussing on the dock that weekend, the thin line making our war stories great stories Vs admissions of stupidity
We decided that making it home safely makes it s great story Last edited by Instigator; 11-10-2019 at 08:50 AM.

UNcomfortable yes, dangerous no.....Just go easy and take your time. I would have made the same decision, faith in your equipment is key. Boat was handling it ok.
