One boat touching another is really not the cause of the blow-over. Like John stated in #8, both boats become one aerodynamically causing too much uncontrollable lift. Notice that the blow-over happened exactly when both boats were running even with each other. Learned this from Shaun Torrente when we were discussing boat blow-overs during my time with him teaching me how to drive my Skater. He had the exact happen to him in F-1 a few years ago.

I raced with shaun back in the champboat days
and when we had 30 boats on the course the 1rst laps were treacherous
with every1 trying to find room for their path and holding their lanes/ground,,,
were fun good days,,,,,,
but every 1nce in a while this would happen just from 1 wiggling to close to another
or worse faster boat doing it on purpose trying to push other boat out while passing other and both get bit,,,,,
can see in video both boats holding their ground/lane while inside boat was faster passing
and as stated when both got even,,,,,,,,,,take off,,,,,,as both boats were going straight to the pin ahead holding a straight lane/line
our champ hulls were only 17' long running over 100
so shows 32' can happen also with same senereo
glad all were ok thats all that matters

.
Another question...
Does the 2 cats have to touch for this phenomenon to happen?
...or just close proximity?
.

Boats are crazy tough as far as aero design. It's not like an automobile running on a fixed surface. They really are on a knife's edge when limits are pushed.

You also need to remember that there is some downforce being employed on these hulls as well.
