Early mercury 2.4 200hp plastic caged main bearings
The factory mercury book has a picture of the plastic caged main bearings in a early 1980's 225hp motor showing a very small half round notch in the black plastic bearing rails...they say to make sure to put the notch up facing the fly wheel....

I would have to look thru my manual. but I'd have to say it's for oiling. Since oil (runs down) if facing flywheel it will catch it if not wont get oil
O. T-rex dont get on here no mo.
Jay does the 2.5s. Hope this helps
