Fastbass Marine TV - Mercury Racing 300XS vs 300R

Many have discussed the 300R. I thought I would test and show the difference on my boat.

Check out Fastbass Marine TV for more tests. http://www.youtube.com/c/FastbassMarineTV

Here is a video comparing the 300XS 1.62 vs. 300XS DBR 1.62 vs. 300XS DBR 1.75 vs. 300R 1.75 on a Allison XB21 (21' Bassboat loaded to fish). The test uses the same props in two different comparisons: 1. 5-100mph test 2. 5-94mph test.

What gets lost in all the data is the real day to day numbers. More in each motor description below.

    Stock 300XS
I had to cut the speed off at 100mph for this test series. Getting one top speed pull that started from an idle was a pain and took a lot of attempts (in a fully loaded bass boat). The stock XS labored to get the 32 P4 out fast. The boat did 101 with the stock XS and that took some serious time to hit. It was really a 98/99 mph boat during the summer.

    DBR 300XS
The DBR made this test possible for the XS. On most days the boat easily hit 100 when it was in the 60's. The lightened flywheel helped the boat get out much better and you could see the midrange and top end was improved as well. The best top speed for the 300XS DBR was 103.2. The DBR was only run in the fall conditions.

Unfortunately, the day I was testing the 1.75 case on the DBR XS my friend was running the P4 used for these tests. I never ran it with the DBR 300XS and 1.75's (borrowed case). The only prop common among all the different setups was a 30 Promax. If I had to guess the P4 would have hit 100 on top. I did run my 34 P3 on the XS DBR 1.75 case test. The P3 was a 101/102 wheel with the 1.62 case on the 300XS DBR and it was stuck at 97/98 during the 1.75 case test. The P4 was always 1-2mph faster when tested head to head. I would estimate the P4 with 1.75’s would have cut the distance gap in half, but would have capped out at 100mph. While the R with 1.75’s is going to blow right by 100 which never gets shown on any of these tests.

    300R
The reason for the 30/50-100 part of the first test is to compensate for the 1.62 case on the XS. Holeshot is completely removed. In the 1.62 vs 1.75 test on Fastbass Marine TV I tested the DBR XS with both cases and found that at around 50-60 the 1.75 case on the XS DBR was slowing down and the 1.62 case was turning on. So the 50-100 part really puts the 300XS DBR in its best light vs the 1.75 300R.

I still think this is a solid comparison. It's the same boat and the same props. I really can't see how this would be done on a working man’s budget any better. I would have loved to see it all done back to back to back, but the feasibility of that is unlikely.

Simply put, the R has changed the performance of my boat beyond my expectations and it hasn't got to run in the temps yet that set the high points for the other motors. Wait until it's 35-40 when the DBR XS put up its best numbers. The stock 300XS struggled to hit 100 and would bump 101 if the stars aligned. The DBR 300XS was a 100-101 boat day in and day out. The R bangs away at limiter around 103-105 and is asking for more hot or cold. I have a video of the R running with two people in the boat the night of a tournament in 89 degree temps at 101. It's a bad to the bone motor and I'm still running all the same props I had when I owned the XS.

The guys that are bad mouthing the new motor have not experienced them first hand 99% of the time. Wait until you get some larger dia. wheels to play with "thats when they really shine". P.M. me your contact information and I will connect you a friend of mine that has done extensive testing in his R rigged Bullet and you guys can exchange results.

Best test comparison Ive seen yet. Anyway you cut it,those are some some strong numbers for a tournament fishing boat.
