in the 70s the first two numbers of the model number give you the hp and year, as in 67b## would be a 1977 6hp...since 1980 number the letters in the word introduces 1-0....the last two numbers of the model number gives you the year,as in 6DREI would be a 1991 6hp....sometimes they stuck a suffix number on the end...just ignore it an look for the C# or E# or S# for 80s,90s,2000s
from 60s back it's confusing and you just need to find a list somewhere and look up your number...

I have an old 6 hp Evinrude with serial number 6202D. I found a website that explains the serial number nomenclature on these older motors, which suggests mine is a 1972 model. What is your number?

Picked it up a couple days ago. Haven't really checked it out yet. I did clean up tiller linkage and got things moving again. Lower locks in forward and reverse. Motor looks like an old motor should on the outside but under cowling looks like new. Very simple. Just finished building a 3.0 Optimax. Unreal what technology has done.

I'll try to remember to post serial # in the morning.
