Okay, next weekend I will measure my combustion chamber depth, and make my mind up about shaving the head to SST60 spec.
The thread on BRF is indeed very helpful. Really makes me think I don't want to miss out on the extra hp I get from high compression.
Also very interesting with the etec reed-cages. Has anybody experience with making them work on the 56ci?
Otherwise I will just cut my stock cages some, hopefully that works out well.
Regarding the timing, if I got that right, my max timing won't affect my idle timing, correct?
For those of you that run a tight head on your engines, did that affect idle in a bad way?
My order at CCMS is going out next week, is the CDI's rpm limiter at 6700 rpm alright for my application?
Thank you!

Yeah I wouldn't think they would fit. Anyways, if you Google BRF-56ci OMC realistic power, you will find some info on it. Starts at page 2.
It might need a custom adapter though.

Not true the small 25 30 35 hp etec uses a 3petal cage that bolts right in to the 60 70 omc.

Yes, thats what I read at BRF too. So if we were to compare the etec cages to stock, or opened up stock cages, which one would be the one to have?
I also read that a reed area can be too big. I wonder where the line is, especially on this OMC.
Thanks for the input!

Here is a little update:
Reeds: CCMS reeds are on their way. I decided to go with porting my old cages. As far as I understood Chris the reeds will be bigger than steel leafs, so that I can port the cahes and still have enough overlap. Will post pictures when I start.
Cylinder head: Merc 2.5 stated that my WSM pistons will be good enough for going a little higher, so the plan will be to shave the head to sst60 specs.
I measured my pocket depth, which is approximately 15,85mm or 0,64in. Does that sound about right?
Now the question is how much to take off? I couldn't find the spec unfortunately.
Also another thought, would it be worth considering tho thermal coat the pistons tops? Not sure how much the cost would be, but I'm wondering if this application would benefit?
Thank you for your help!

At least thats what I read at HPBC. Can someone confirm?

You do realize that once you boost your compression to SST 60 specs. that you will need to run it on 100 octane, right? I would keep the compression down to 150 to 160.
All that motor needs is to clean up the ports a bit and shave the head 0.060 off. If you were bolting this to a small light race boat than go all out, but in your case I would leave it like what I mentioned first.

Found some time last week and did some work on the motor
Removed all the old paint and put a new coat on, also did the portmatching as far as I dared to.
The (I think) boost ports were by far the worst! Can I expect noticeable gains by making them wider?
So far I didn't really grind on the sleeves and just removed aluminum, so that the air could use all the port area.
I don't want to go crazy with the ports as I fear ruining the block with all the time and money in it already.
I also removed the casting flash in the crankcase.
Yesterday I opened up the first reed-cage. More could be had on the bridges, but I'm not sure if that's necessary?
Please let me know what you think before I go out and ruin all three haha...
The block is planed and the Cylinder head is currently at the machine shop were (as sharpeye Mike suggested) 0.060 are taken off.
It should be back next week.
Will have to do the piston mod and clean all the parts. I wonder how to get all the shavings out of the ports? Tried scrubbing with a plastic brush
and hitting it with the hose, which took out most of the grime. Not sure about the hard to reach spots. How do you guys go about it?
Thanks for your input!
