One of my favorite motors of all times.
Owned/built/raced several.
Saw 68 mph on a Keller speedometer in a Butts Aerowing hydro.
That was when the kilo record was 72.
Thats flying w/a 20 cu in motor.
Kept then for yrs after I quit racing with the intent of building a tunnel for twins.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

I know! Somehow, what made a long time ago produced MORE power than the same size new crap now? I'm getting that feeling that the gas back then was like NITRO (Until the Gas Crisis 73, and had just BOUGHT a new Monte Carlo ), compared the crap now. All these additives, lead gone, etc? Thinking now Avgas sold today, was the junk we got for 36 cents a gallon! Glad lived it...no regrets..

Yep.
I bought new and may still have the manual.
They were a unique and different motor. Had a square driveshaft and no water pump.
Here in region six we had some of first ones, a local buddy was a distributor.
W/no water pump and force fed cooling, they were sensitive to engine height as I torched one that way.
On HP’s I seem to remember hearing/seeing low 30’s and the 20H’s were mid/high 20’s.
They were also quite a bit heavier.
I ran both motors on same boats (hydros and runabouts) and back then, the H’s were faster on the straightaways but Yamato’s our pulled out of the corners.
Was also about the same time they started shortening the courses and that was it.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

If I recall the dyno reports a good 20H is 22 and an exceptional one is 24. Never 25 or more.

I know when I raced them back to back it always felt like the Yamato had way more torque.
At that point though, the BSH Kilo was 72 and the 20SSH was only 68 but they were still figuring out wheels and the Yamato club foot gear case was a pig compared to the Merc Speedmazter.
I put a sliding chamber on the Yamato and it was bad mammer jammer!
They we’re still figuring out classes for it and I gave up/quit before they allowed a real gear case on it.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
