Rebuild
I know a lot of you have rebuilt or had a powerhead rebuilt. I'm putting a budget together for winter work and am curious what a full rebuild on a 2.4 bridgport might run ?

Many variables. Will there be block work? Does it need new pistons or just rings? EFI or carb? New or re-use bearings?

Unless it has already been done they are plated cylinders that cannot be bored and will need steel sleeves @ approx. $150 pr hole. Pistons probably around $80 each. Injectors will need service @ $100 per motor. Gasket kits prob. $100 each. Prob. $400 or more per for bearings. All these are approximates and not Mercury parts. I would get online and get specific prices. A lot depends on the block and what grade parts you want. Either way it gets expensive quick. Good luck.

X2 im with Randy the Bridgeport was great in its hay day back when my hair was all the same color (no gray)they came two ways chrome and Nic no boring here if you want to go back plated its bout 1100 better now but its killer looking when u get back from US Chrome going that way puts you in the 150 175 hour life on the motor its just the way it is on hipo motors going back with mixed metals is something i dodged on my 2.4 adventures either all steel or all plated. its hard to say what it would cost for me since i have not done one in a good while last one i did was a 260 for myself and it was pricey i went with merc stuff which is insane today and even back then but i was full bore in to rebuilding for the public and money was changing hands quick in those days lol . forged pistons and metal cage bearing( HIPO) are definitely more money all well as gaskets since a lot of people are nla 2.4 stuff more and more personally i would look for a blown 225 promax and go that way good luck with the rebuild

Dave S. ...cheep motor rebuilder....... Not looking for work on this thread. When I build them I don't replace All bearings. Pistons that pass the eye test and have good tight wrist pins and ring pins get used. Should have SPS bolts that get reused......just red to hold them. Bad about B/port is the bridge gets hot and pushes into the bore......usally cracks the bridge. The pistons that came with BPs were Mahles..... the best at the time......need top pins. I would Not use after market head gaskets.......that is why I watch E Bay for nos gaskets.....Found 6 old nla 2.4 bp gaskets that way. JMO......

Not many Bridgeports left with all Nic cylinders, if they get run hot the bridge will crack. Most have some or all steel sleeves. Mahle made the original pistons but very late 90's Merc had replacement pistons made by Wiseco, there were very slight differences in skirt cut and piston porting. Was told these were worth a few HP. Wizzard makes a replacement piston with the correct cooling- lube cut in the skirt for the bridge, otherwise 2.4 pistons must be modified. Easy to spend more money one a BP vs building a Pro Max that makes more power. If you want to run a horn Kenny Anthony at Black Magic makes an adapter to turn a Pro Max to crankcase injection.

OK, So next question - how to tell if the cylinders were replaced, and/or if they are chrome or nik.?

For starters u can use a magnet and if it sticks to 1 it's been replaced with steel sleeve, chrome looks chrome and will have few small pits in cyl wall
