Merc V8 400R
Hi!
I have a Phantom 25 (1985 model) with a Verado 400R. It runs 89 mph at 7,060 rpms with a Max5 prop. Next summer I will try Hills CNC cleaver.
If I am correct the Verado engines will be discontinued. The question is when the 400R will off the market, and the new V8 4,6 litre will take its place.
Any ideas? My warranty ends in 2022, so I should sell it before the season of 2021.
I could ofcourse buy a 450R and I will be close to 100 mph. But the price is very stiff, approx USD 59,000.....
Thanks !

.
from Jacosmarine website, the least expensive 450R black is $42,155 and the most expensive black is $48,090 USD
Are the controls and harness of the 400R and the 450R compatible?

Hi!
Thanks !
I believe its plug and play. USD 42,155 x 9 NOK plus 25% VAT is NOK 474,243 eq USD 52,693. So that helps

It’s anybody's best guess at this point, but I see some options. The 350/400m/400r are situated in power between the na 4.6 300r and sc 4.6 450r, so the 4.6 can certainly get there power-wise.
- If they detune the 450r to 350-400 hp, then there would be no cost or weight advantage, only disadvantages for both.
- In order to get the 4.6 na up to 400 hp, I think the compression would have to be higher and you lose one of the great advantages of the 4.6 (87 octane across the board). The coyote, for instance, didn’t make that kind of power until they expanded it to 5.0 liters, added tivct, and increased compression to 11/1.
- Another option, though less likely I think, would be to supercharge the 3.4 v6. You’d have a cog and cost advantage vs detuning the 450r.
I’m not completely convinced the 400r is on the way out just yet. It’s been rock-solid reliable and I’m certain merc has been able to optimize production to keep costs down after building verados for so long. I could be biased though...

Pricing them cheap in fine, but no good if you don't have them. I call Jaco's last month and they only had 10 300's in the last year

The 400 Verados are still selling like hot cakes. You'll be waiting for a while if you insist on a V8 400. I'd go with the 300 Pro XS V8 for its price point if you're willing to wait for it. Otherwise the standard 400 Verados are the best bet and you can actually get one relatively soon.
