Painting Cowling
What type of paint and clear coat is used to paint a fiberglass cowling?
Obviously something that will hold up well.

Top of the price point is PPG. Depends on color too. Imron marine is good for just black with no clear.
You can also use some lower price base/clear coat auto paints. (like nason) An epoxy primer is a good idea too. Or use at least a 2-K primer.

I am having a hard time finding PPG Automotive paint which is what I believe I need.
Can't find it online. Anyone know where it can be purchased?If you think this is fun, wait til next weekend!

I have painted many cowlings with Black Dupont Imron and have never had a Problem. You can also polish black Imron to smooth it out or clear coat it with clear Imron. That will also wet sand wonderfully as it hardens. Boeing has used Imron for over fifty years for a reason.

Imron is a great urethane because of it high solids an easier choice may be the ppg in a base clear - you may have an easier time spraying it out and putting a couple coats of the urethane clear over it . Probably best to just drop by a local body shop and they would be happy to hand over the quart of base and quart of clear you would need . Or just prep the cowl and hand it off and have them spray it out , probaby inexpensive . Generally speaking if you are unaware of what exactly to use trust a body tech in the area- they know . I think its maybe best since where are you throwing the solvents for cleaning the gun and such . Do your simple prep , cleaning and sanding and hand it off , good materials are expensive but last a long while . The reason Imron is used on aircraft is it' a high solid meaning less solvent and is generally solid colours but is very resistant to fade , shrinkage and with a good primer behind it is very stable and adheres very well . You dont buff aircraft just simple wash and they stay shiney . Just tooo big . Now base is just a very easy product to spray out - fool proof - flashes off quickly to a dull finish and then the urethane clear - very durable - is what pops and locks the shine down . The higher quality clears are just that clear vs a yellow and locks that shine in . So your more aware and can be done do it yourself easilly - wear a respirator and most important is the primer - foundation and prep work - dewax the cowl and parts sand and mask it and tack off well and spray your primer - sand with 400 well and get the edges with scotchbright - blow off , tack off for dust and spray a couple coats of base - let it flash off - go dull - and spray a couple coats of clear . If you want show quality - scotch bright it the next day , tack it off and spray another coat of clear and it will seem deeper in colour or perception . If you see some imperfections you can sand and buff or just leave it be and you can always cut it for a future perfection . Hope that helps .

I use Urethane high gloss and last time no clear coat. Been almost 2 years and still shiny like new.

hey guys , thanks for the additional input.
I kinda beat ya to the punch line here. I found a local body shop that will paint this for me.
I got maybe 3-4 hours of prep left before I hand it off. I also purchased new decals and the body shop
will install them too. Deciding to let the "Professionals" do this for me is the best choice here.If you think this is fun, wait til next weekend!

Am about to use this product for the first time. Interesting concept. A catylized aerosol. Catylized paint is always better. Nice alternative for smaller projects. No mess-No fuss. Has a nice spray fan pattern. Keeps for a few days also, so you can use it a second time. About $20-$22.00 each, shipped, on-line. There's a couple different brands out there...

Good info.I'm in the middle of painting an 89 Evinrude XP.Color doesn't match my new to me Charger SV.It's gonna be fun.
If I knew it was going to last this long I would have taken better care of it.
