What kind of shape is the starter in general?
You can get a brush kit cheap enough if it's good shape other wise.. and can get starters remanufactured etc..
I would just buy another starter if it's questionable it's worth every dime

It looks in good shape. But I'm sure its the original which is 20+ years old. I was just looking at new ones. Might just replace it.

Just ordered a new one anyway. I'll swap it out and see what happens.

Did the wires get hot when cranking. I forget the ohm spec on the main Leeds for the cost might go ahead and replace them.

1- what is the voltage at starter while cranking?

2 - Do a voltage drop test on the + and - cables while cranking which shouldn't be more than about 0.3v

3 - both easy and free tests to do, if ok then it needs a starter!

I need to get some time too look into it more. I know that using a jumpbox or the chargers engine start function make very little if any difference in starting.

Well I believe it's fixed.....for now. Swapped the starter out and cleaned all the contacts. Cranked up first try, couple seconds of cranking and choking and it fired right off. Best it's ever started. Cranking sounds much better. I'll keep posted on issues if they come back.

I believe I would tear down the old starter and rebuild it for a spare. Parts don’t cost much and would be cheap insurance.
