If I had a bad coil or any ignition problem outside of a timing concern a weak spark would generally cause a noticeably different looking spark plug. No?

    Yes and no ..
The early model ignitions could have a bad CDM and it would pick on a different hole.
Vnemous texted me the pages with all the early model specs ... a couple years ago since my service manual doesn't cover that far back .
I'll find the info , or text him to see if he will post it here . It's all ohm meter stuff .
Bobby will have it too , I'll pester him as well ..

Chaz = thinkin, it should become a sticky

Tach could be off as well and nothing wrong with the engine. Try confirming tach signals, regulator rectifier. Battery hookup if changed can also be crossed up.

The engine in question builds rpms at a slower rate, even if the tach was off it’s still obvious that the port engine is weaker to get going.

reeds are on the way. I’ll do as much checking as I have time for but I’m a busy guy and may just throw the reeds in and see where I’m at. At the very least I will check all the coils and timing. Thanks again for all the input, I’m confident that I can solve this with all of the information I’ve been given here.

Ok so the reeds are all in excellent condition aside from one thing. I noticed the rubber coating to be coming apart on the top reed block on the port or problem outboard. Doubtful that is causing anything but I’ll het a used unit before I do the reeds anyway.

On to the electrical checks tomorw and timing after reeds installed.

You can send them out and have the rubber coating taken off and they will seal better.. if they are cracking that bad.
    Can't tell from pics..
If the cracking isn't to bad when you lap them it should take care of it.. did you get stuffers too or no?

I cheeped out on the stuffers. I honestly cant see putting the reeds 65 thousandths closer in making a noticeable difference in my hum drum application. you could loose the gasket and put the reed plate on with rtv and get them 30 or 40 thousandths deeper, why does nobody just do that?

upon closer inspection one of the reeds was bent slightly and id bet that caused a flutter bad enough to beat the rubber coating off.

Well like you said your a bit over powered right now till you get them converted to 25s so.. was just curious and if you did how much if a difference there was..

All it takes is one bad Reed and that could be all the problem the 1000 rpm difference the sneezing.
Just make sure you lap them really well

I have been playing with, porting, and modifying 2 strokes in anything from dirt bikes, atv, waverunners, stand up skis, mopeds, even snowmobile engines for many years and i have never heard of lapping a reed valve lol. please explain, you marine guys are a different breed of 2 stroke guys.

and i am certain that small defect in the reeds will have caused my sneeze. Im not positive it would cause the low power but we will see soon.

I completely forgot to ask when i called Carson marine service today, how much does it run and is it worth having the injectors cleaned. is there any adjustments they make to even them out or is it just a cleaning.

Oh you don't lap the Reeds you lap the cages it's truing them by sanding them on a flat surface metal or glass etc
With sand paper then can use a compound..
So they are nice and flat and clean so they seal really well

And yes you do it to the rubber..
But if rubber is getting bad cracking etc you can send them out and have them remove the rubber..
I've done it with a chemical that dissolves the rubber then lapped them..
