2002 mercury 300x wont go on plane
ok so heres the setup: 22 talon, 16in setback, 2002 mercury 300x,optimax exhaust plate, hydrotec tuner, fishing mid. sporty lower with 1.75 gears
heres the story. ive been running a 2003 250xs for the last 4 summers with basicly no problems. at the beginning of this year, i added the hydrotec tuner for a bit more bark. ran fine.
ive just purchased a 2002 300x powerhead in good working condition, that was running well before it was taken off the be replaced with a 300xs later on
i installed this 300x on my optimax exhaust plate. blocked the extra hole in the plate for the compressor and plugged everything in the same as the opti was setup. it starts up fine, revs fine in neutral or in gear on the hose. so i taught i was good to go. i took it to the ramp and backed it in the water. start it up, idles a bit lower, but its expected with it being submerged. i put it in reverse and it stalls, it may have been a bit cold still. managed to get it started back up and keep it running a bit higher in rpm. i shift it and it seems ok. i try to get on plane and it just wont spool up. i have a 30 pitch bravo 1 with 4 holes on it at this time. tried it a couple of times and it wouldnt get over 1800-2000rpm. if i trim it up and get the exhaust near or out of the water it revs fine, in neutral or in gear, but as soon as i trim it down it just wont go.
so i went back home, took appart the vst, it was fine, checked the screen on the hp pump, its ok, took appart the lift pump, looked fine, no tears or anything, drained both my fuel fiters ( the one on the motor and one in the boat) no water or debri, butterfly opens fully, tps is at 0% idle at 0.41v and 4.25v at 100% throttle. no codes no binding whatsoever in the drive train..
so after all that, i took it back to the lake today with a 28 promax prop instead. warm it up good, revit up on the trailer, its fine, put it in gear while strapped to the trailer with motor trimmed so the exhaust above the lower are slightly under water, i give it gas, and it want to jump in the back of the truck. trim it down and give'r gas..seems boggy. i push it off the trailer a try to get on plane..2000rpm max and it wont break free...again trim it up and its fine....
tomorrow ill check fuel pressure because i forgot today. i also read the reeds could do this but i ran fine per the other owner... any ideas?? seems like it cant push the water out of the mid to spool up..Last edited by mistah_max; 09-18-2019 at 12:51 AM.

Theirs a gasket thing with xs’s iirc that can plug the exhaust they often carbon up quite a lot might check the relief for clogs and foot and can.
If it has the cps give it a look over.
Iat issues are popping up in the heat.
Try a smaller prop to see if it’s load based or engine. Which 4 open holes should have had you touching the sky on rpm
start with compression and spark then fuel. Read the plugs should show lean if fuel is weak

compression, fuel pressure under load, reeds, Also i would send the injectors out this winter and have the cleaned and checked.

injector and reeds where on the to do list for this winter. im just baffled it was in working order when baught and now this. only thing that changed between now and the is the mid..and the boat its on

Did you take it (on a boat/mid) for a sea trial before purchasing?

thanks for everybodys response and suggestions but i found what was wrong
...lol cant believe it but hey, it is what it is.
so i took off the throttle body to have a better look at the reed valves with a camera...looked at the bottom and there it was...the stupid rubber sealing ring that goes on the throttle body had fallen at the bottom of the plenum matching perfectly the bottom so when i first looked in the plenum earlier i never saw it....lol i just laughed! but at the same time i was thinking this couldnt just be it... so back to the ramp and back it in. let it warm up and tried to take off.. success! couldnt believe it! there a soight hesitation of maybe a second before spooling up but its a trough hub prop. seems to runs great now...mannn...
ill still get the injector flowed and ill do reeds also. luckly no further damage was done form that thong being down there!1998 charger stv. 225 promax. -sold-

Glad you found it.
I would get a set of Chris Carson Marine reeds (CCMS) I have them in both my motors just put a set in my brothers stinger 75 and they have been great.

I have a 300x on a bass mid with the tuner cut and have had to add extra vent holes to every thru hub prop I have. Try and over the hub prop like a chopper or a pro et and see what happens is what I would suggest.

thanks. yeah i saw in other posts you have a similar setup. that why i kinda new something stupid like this would probably be my problem. just had to find it! ill probably send the 30 bravo yout to have 4 more holes added to it
