Dave is going through some tough times triggered by the death of a close friend, and is drinking too much.

Not quite 29 years ago I went thru something too. That's when it became a matter of MY life or death. And the D part came close. Lots of interaction with AA and a lot of friends that wanted me to make it. Just remember, "It works if you work it".

God is always willing but you have to be wanting. I have lived and been around alcoholics all my life. Not much is more destructive due to the fact that it is socially acceptable and available for purchase at every stop. I am very fortunate to have learned from the things that I have witnessed and therefore choose not to take part in it. My thoughts and prayers are with you to beat the addiction but it has to start from you within. Very glad to hear that you are okay.

It will be surprising how many of your "friends" will turn out to be just "drinking buddies". When the "drinking buddies" go away, you will be amazed at how much less drama and stress you are caught up in-not to mention feeling better physically and emotionally. Alcohol is a depressant. You can not consume a depressant on a continual basis without experiencing some level of depression. The people that are your true friends will become closer to the "new you" I have witnessed this several times first hand.

Please make the effort for yourself and the others that love you. If I didn't care and know what a difference it makes with people in your situation, I would not be taking the time to express it.

Dave your wife is a special person to put up with this, you should be happy She is able to cope...
When I was a young teen I drank too much, I told myself when I turned 21 I would stop...
At 26 one of of my drinking buddies joined AA because he knew he had a problem, he invited me to go with him to a meeting, I went to two and decided I had to make changes but I wanted to do it myself and did.
With 50 years behind you will need professional help, nothing is easy, quitting anything is difficult and the bottom line is there is no cheating, no such thing as one beer one cigarette (quit them 30 years, last time I quit) one anything is too much If you can't control.
