If not find a smaller diameter hose or wrap tape on the tube until it's tight. This will confirm that there's an obstruction in the motor or not.

Glancing thru the thread, no mention of the gaskets being checked for correct position and the correct gasket used. They give you gaskets for a sterndrive and a o/b in the same kit sometimes. And they are different. jm2cts.

Why I always glue all the gaskets. I use 3m trim adhesive.

You're right, it fits. Will try early evening.

I used to live at 1575 Perkins Rd near the university when I went to LSU in the mid 1980's.

I didn't realize there had been several replies when I sent my post above, which was for tunnelmike in Baton Rouge La.

For gfinch yes the kit I bought had more gaskets than necessary. The gaskets I used were identical to the ones that came out and identical to the outline of the water pump housing base. All openings lined up.

I know exactly where that is ! Geaux Tigers

Imo if your gasket is blown like that it's from the inability to push water up the tube. I've seen over 30psi when switching powerheads and never blew a gasket like that.

I just flowed water to the lower unit with the water muffs with the unit off the engine sitting vertically on a motor stand. I thought I would have to turn the drive shaft for water to flow. But water flows up out the water tube through the impeller and pump housing without the drive shaft turning. The water pump housing and impeller are normally installed as far as I know.

Important question - Is that normal for water to flow without the impeller turning? I don't know.

i am very sorry i did not take time to reread my post, with this much trouble ,i would put tube into pump hgs and submerge gearcase in bucket of water up to top of pump THEN turn driveshaft by hand cwise and you should see water coming out top of tube(aprox 2-5inches)above water in bucket, not a large amount but the pump should work.. THEN remove tube from pump and insert into mid, adapt garden hose to bottom of tube, without g/c mounted and run motor (making sure tube does not fall out of mid)motor should be cool to touch w/out horn and peeing properly.again sorry for the bad post this afternoon.started to rain and neighbor was at my shop door.work-work-work-work-gotta quit soon.nx spring it'll be my 60th yr dooin outboards-th

mn808gade - I have the engine and lower unit all back together so I won't be able to try the experiment you suggest.

I did insert the water tube into the midsection and held a garden hose hard against it and flowed water - nothing came out of the pee hole. Maybe there is an obstruction. I took one of the thermostat attachments off and blew into the engine block and into the hose going to the thermostat and both transmitted air freely. I will try to run it on a garden hose in the morning and if it doesn't work I will bring it in to the shop.

Thank you everyone for your help.

Was it working before water pump change? If it was, then it has to be something you did during change. Pinched grommet, misalignment with tube, clogged tube? Only takes a few psi to circulate through engine. Water psi in most houses is 40-45 psi.

Yes it was working fine before the water pump change. I pulled up the water pump base to change the o-ring and gasket underneath, so that's additional opportunity to do something wrong. First one I've done, but I am mechanically inclined. Bought the boat July 2018 and had no idea of the water pump age then so I figured I had better change it. So yes it must be something I did but I can't see what.

Looking at pictures of the water pump base and housing with impeller in it (enclosed), I'm trying to imagine exactly how the pump transmits water. Obviously the vanes and voids sweeping past from where the water comes to where it goes pumps water. But I don't see exactly how. Does anyone know?

if you cant force water up the copper tube and through your motor with your garden hose, something is wrong from pipe to adapter plates.

The stainless steel plate was assembled gasket-plate-gasket just like the shop manual and how the old ones came out. I tried hooking a garden hose up to the flushing port and it flowed water normally that way including out of the pee-hole.

Small world indeed... I lived on Robert St about a block from you in the mid '80s.
