    First impression of 300 V8

So we decided to replace our 13 year old pontoon powered by a 150 Yamadog (which has been a great engine even if slow on a 24' pontoon) with a 25 footer with 300 V8. I never knew I could like a 4 stroke this much. It's really smooth and torquey. I would have loved to have waited for a 450 but the price tag leaves me chilly and would have to go to 27' to get the rating which makes the price even worse and the bigger boat won't go in our boathouse. Seems odd that all of the dealers around here seem to be rigging these with the Merc 3 blade Evolutions, but it doesn't have any tendency to fan in a sharp turn. It's got a 17 on it and turns about 6200 at 45 MPH or a little more, so assuming 1.85 gears it's slipping upper teens although I'm not feeling it. I'm thinkin' about trying a 19 on it but the dealer thinks I should leave it alone. Pluggin' that into the prop calculator it looks like it oughta' drop the RPM down to about 5600 if it doesn't increase the speed which I would guess it would slightly. I'm just not sure how these newer engines with all their smarts start adjusting themselves to more load but I don't like the idea of turning it past the factory recommended redline o 6000 frequently and I doubt we'll be pulling anything with it.

So you bought a ECO motor, show some pictures,

Last week I'm stopped at a light and this pontoon boat looked like 28 ft, SLEEK looking sun roof then I see a 627 Seven Marine on the back

    NEVER saw that before.

Of course the motor matched the boats color,GOLD.

I got a buddy running a 2019 250 pro XS 4 stroke on his caymas, it was rigged with a 23 p prop. Why are the new mercs running such low pitches? Any thoughts?

I was entertaining the Seven marine notion on my toon. There is a 27 Playcraft that was built a couple years ago with a 627 on it and it only runs around 62. The same boat with a 400 on it runs about the same. That extra 400 lbs makes a big difference. The seven sure sounds nice.

I haven't gone completely into over the hill mode YET. Still have the Talon with the twin 280's and the Eliminator with the twin 700's. My buddy Chris thinks I oughta' sell the 280's and put twin 300 V8's on the Talon, but I'm still really likin' the 2 strokes. When I win the lottery and buy a HUGE block of Brunswick stock we're gonna' go back to building 280's, 300 Drags and S3000's again.

Only Mercury Racing 300R’s are available with 1.60 and 1.75 gear ratio, the Mainline Mercury 300 has 1.75 gears. Unfortunately that’s 21% slip with your numbers.

I do know heavy RIB’s with props that small benefit from Enertia ECO props. They’re only 3-blades, but they’re huge diameter, 16” I think. I put one on my friend’s deck boat in a 17P and it runs well.

    Hope this helps.

The Mercury Marine website shows the two ratios available as 1.75 and 1.85. QUOTE FROM MERC WEBSITE:
    Gearcase ratio
    • 1.75:1 or 1.85:1
I tried to call Mercury today from that website phone number but it's worthless. Sometimes it does fast busy and other times it just disconnects after ringing one time. The boat doesn't seem to ventilate the prop at all, even in a sharp turn but I'm afraid in going to a 19, which shows as less diameter than the 17 it may lose some bite. I couldn't find the diameters on Merc's website, so relying only on what the dealer said.

So you have the 300 Verado, not the basic 300 4 Stroke with the conventional mid section. The regular 300 only comes in the 1.75 ratio, the Verado has the optional 1.85 gears. They both use the 5.44” lower which usually likes a 15” or larger diameter prop so the Enertia @ 16” should be fine. You might want to try a 19P Revolution 4.

Yes, it is the 300 Verado.......... the V8 version. I'm having a hard time referring to it as Verado because I never liked the inline 6 type.

The standard Enertia, non ECO, is still the prop of choice for most pontoons with the new power. I agree with OP that he can step up in pitch.

Not sure about the 300, but I know on the 450's, the ECM will pull percentage of power at WOT so to not hit the limiter. Basically, reduces HP rather than slamming the typical "rev limiter" we're used to on the 2 strokes. Only way to know for sure is either up the pitch or plug in the computer.
