Should the water pump base be removed and O-ring changed every few impeller changes?
I'm installing a water pump kit on a 1996 Merc 200 EFI for my first time. I have a Mercury Shop Manual for early to mid 90's V-6 2.0, 2.4 and 2.5 liter engines. It says to "Pry up the water pump base with 2 pry bars over cushion material as shown" in the image. I recently bought the engine and have no idea when the O-ring in the water pump base was last changed. I would like to change this O-ring as it came in the kit. I tried prying the base up but it just won't budge. I'm afraid of breaking some part of the water pump base because it is plastic. My next step is to have a friend help to have 4 pry bars trying to lift it.
I looked at 3 YouTube videos on installing a water pump kit and in none of them was the water pump base lifted up. This water pump kit came with several O-rings and I'm not sure which one to use.
Is there a trick to getting the water pump base up and out of there?
Thanks to those who replied to my previous post about the metal oil seals.

They get a bit stuck at times but you are doing it the correct way. Don't be skeered. Pry it outta there.

For me
only if a pressure test on the gearcase show a leak there.
And if if I put an new pump house in.
Its one one of those no need unless leaking or maybe tore up when removing

I do it everytime I do the pump. It's in the kit, but the time it fails a pressure test the ring has already failed. Did it fail the forst trip out after your pressure test (resulting in possible damage) or the last time you went out and is probably ok?
Why risk it? You're there, you have the parts.

Really why not i change them every time???? along with new base gasket i always replace the entire pump always. and some folk only change impeller!!! so also check stainless plate on impeller/gasket only replacement and inside of the top stainless cup if grooved up change them it affects water pressure more then you think as the upper and lower seals on impeller(ridges) will worn the thickness of the depth in the groves

You replace the o-ring, then get out the pressure tester. You need to verify your work. Any parts that show any wear get replaced.

If you remove the base from a salt water unit you might find some corrosion under it.
I typically like to know what I'm dealing with so removal is the norm. My father on the other hand thinks ignorance is bliss.Azure AZ259, 8.1
