how do people sleep at nite? they sleep just fine. its normal for them. just part of the way there parents raised them. everyone needs to take every opportunity they can, when this happens to demolish their reputation. only way its gunna stop. its up to us, no one else. think about him doing this over and over again going into the future, to honest people. put him out of business NOW!

I don’t think greedy Americans is the problem. (And that the laziest, least competent mechanics end up working on outboards seems to be a universal phenomenon, btw)

Psychology experiments, e.g. with letting people find lost wallets do find that Americans are on average less honest than people in this corner of the world, but from a global perspective, you are in the middle of the pack: https://www.latimes.com/science/la-s...620-story.html

Americans do value convenience more, and that is what lets you take advantage of each other. It always strikes me how much better people could live in America if they only took better care of how they spent their money. I know Raceman has made similar observations.

But that requires constantly checking that you are not taken advantage of when it comes to your savings, your debt, your insurance, your car, utilities, paying $1 for a bottle of water when tap water is free, shopping at Whole Foods, etc, etc.

For example, over here, you would never see two gas stations across the road from each other charge different prices, because the vast majority of people would feel that they were getting screwed if they went to the more expensive one, so that station would only get a handful of customers until it reduced its price to parity with the cheaper one.

On the other hand, the vast majority of Americans evidently don’t think it is worth saving 30 cents times 16 gallons = $4.80 if it means that it takes an additional 2 minutes to make a U-turn. $4.80 for 2 minutes of work is equal to $144 per hour. After tax.

That is why there is NOTHING wrong with getting a second opinion. Hell, send him another $??? bucks if it makes you feel better. You can sure turn it and make way more than 500 out of it.

And guilty as charged. I have the same affliction as you. Bought a late 90's 200 EFI the other day for a grand. Needs a piston, and a bit of welding on the front half.

Have seen too many people that have no problem taking advantage of someone to make a buck. Does not sit well with me. Will not stay close to people like that. One day, they will be trying to get one over on me.

The definition of a "Man" is "Doing the right thing when no one is looking"... I still fit that definition after being a mechanic for 45 years.

Agreed. They probably hoped to buy it off of him cheaply, and then resell it for a big profit.

I'm a big believer in karma... just give it time, and they'll get theirs.
