How do people sleep at night?
I am a 2.5 mercury parts hoarder. I don't need any parts, but when I find a good deal I jump on it. I bought a complete 1996 2.5 200 EFI for $500 from a 91 year old man that still fishes tourneys. His mechanic said it had "0" compression in 1 cylinder. I drove 3 hours to pick it up. When I had time, I tore heads off expecting carnage. I was shocked to find zero damage. The problem was it took on water from a divider plate leak. Very easy to see where it was leaking. So I called the fellow I bought it off of and told him what I found. He said "wow, you should be happy you got a really good deal!!". I said, no I am not happy at all. I told him he should call them and give them hell. The old guy told me he cashed in some of his bonds and stuff to purchase a new motor, but couldn't afford a prop for the motor. He was using the money I gave him for a new prop. I cant believe an outboard shop could do this to someone, let alone a 91 year old man?? This was a couple of months ago and I'm still pissed about it. Just to clarify, He didn't buy the new motor off of that outboard shop. What would be their incentive to tell him that his motor was junk???

I used to deal with a marine insurance surveyor who offered me opportunities to buy damaged items. He had a low hours 2.5L 150 off a bass boat that had hit a stump and kicked the engine up at high speed. The OB shop told the owner and surveyor the engine was damaged and would have to be totally rebuilt. I was offered the motor for $500 and took it. The dealer was a jerk when I went to pick it up. Got it home and could find no engine damage whatsoever. Called the previous owner who said it ran fine the rest of the day, it just screwed up the power trim.
The dealer was apparently planning to spend a few hundred on the motor and resell it for $4-5K. That is how these things sometimes happen. Sux but true......18 Talon/2.4 carb SOLD

I never thought of that. They probably offered him a few hundred towards a trade in and they were gonna fix it and sell it for 3-4 grand! Wow

Couple months back I had a boat come in that had just left a dealer but still did not run. I asked what had been done and was told carb rebuild and several other minor issues. I proceeded to try to chase down the issue with that in mind. After everything else checked out I tore into the carb only to find the "mechanic" that did the carb rebuild had lost the main jet and went ahead and assembled the carb without one. Then he had the balls to charge them $500 for his effort knowing there was still a major issue. On top of that a couple days go by and customer calls saying it goes WOT when shifting into neutral. I tell him to bring it back only to find the timing advance lock nut had been loosened and not retightened advancing the timing way past max at idle. I don't operate that way and like stated above, how do they sleep at night.
BTW I got the thermal valve. Did you get the paypal and was it sufficient.

Unfortunately it's in all fields....I'm in the HVAC business and can't tell you how many people are taken, especially our elderly for a bad heat exchanger or compressor and it's literally a $20 part would have it up and running again.....

Don't discount the possibility that the "mechanic" isn't really a mechanic at all. Or if he is maybe not adequately trained and with little experience. Hard to fill jobs with good qualified peeps these days. I know. I'm a Contractor.

I have been an employer forever. Good folks near impossible to get cuz someone already has em. Regardless of your ability or the abilities of your employees there is never a reason to rip someone off.

Greed
IN GENERAL us americans are greedy, youll get scammed when ever possible. thank god, what goes around, comes around. i had a clunking in my ext caddy, took it in to have them test drive it. i went with him. we hit a small bump, and bang. 2 of the rocked it back and forth, said bad body moumts. body has to be lifted, blah, blah. 1400$ advised me not to go any long distance trips. took it to a mom -pop auto repair, said my windshield was loose, get a tube of silicone and do the 4 corners. repair cost 5 bucks! no more noise. they were gonna rip me off for 1400. and i would still have the noise!
