Can a prop have too much “grip” in a turn?
Hey all,
So my set up is a bit different than a lot of the go fast boats on this forum. I have a 753 Edge Diamondback with a slightly modified 2 stroke Yamaha 50 tiller. I’ve been playing with props and set up for the last 8 months or so trying to get the hop out of it when I took a turn.
My current favorite prop is a 15p Powertech SRD. I have a hydraulic jack plate and have it set at 3 inches roughly. I’ve been playing with drilling vent holes to increase the holeshot. My boat likes the 11.25in diameter. My motor on take off does not .
I have found the sweet spot. 3-4 degrees of positive trim once on step. 3 inches on the plate. 10in of setback. Once the boat breaks over the hump on getting out of the hole she’s off like a bat out of hell. Stable. Hull lifts appropriately from what I can tell from the performance. Waterline is behind the back bench. Can finally take sharp corners running a creek wide open and not almost get thrown from the boat.
My question is this: Can prop slip HELP a boat turn smoothly? The ONLY way I’ve been able to get this boat to turn smooth and tight at WOT is to introduce what I’m assuming is aeration with the prop aka slip. I don’t lower the plate. I don’t really have to lower the trim. Just make a smooth transition into the turn, the prop “slips”, exit the turn, and prop hooks back up. Momentum is maintained through the corner. But, that goes against everything I’ve read about getting boats to corner well.
Im thinking about having the prop worked aka more cup added, but if it’s going to hurt the ability for this prop to turn, it will do more harm than good. Thoughts?
