    Yamaha 225 Excel build???

So I'm pretty sure I picked up a Yamaha Excel 225 for 800 bucks. It no spark but the leak down was tremendous on it. I happen to have a 150 laying around. So I put my electrics and 200hp carbs on it. I double checked the carb sizes and it was the same. Just two different styles. Mine were the twin bowl and the carbs on it were the single bowl. Which ones are considered to be better? Should I put the Excel electric stuff back on it? What would be the best combination?

The horsepower is in the block porting and the jetting. So are you building an Excel or a 150 with 200 carbs on it????? Another Scream and Fly WTF???

Then you don't have a 225 Excel. The 225 Excel had twin bowl Nikki carburetors with bigger bores and different jetting than the twin bowl Nikki carbs of the 200 of the same generation.

The 220 Special, which was the top model of the first generation of Yamaha V6 engines had single bowl carbs.

I bought a boat with a 150 on it. Said it had fuel issues. Started digging into it and found it had 200hp carbs on it. Needless to say I had a failure and needed a new powerhead. I found this powerhead and put it on my mid section. It too had a 150 cowl and the I'd stamp was gone. So in trying to figure out what it was I used the block configuration in Yamaha parts breakdown. It has horizontal reeds with microcomputer electrics on it. Only engine that had that was the Excel but I didn't think to look at the 220 special. I'll have to that. In either case which carbs were better. I'll check to see what the jet sizes are versus what they possibly should be. Should I put the microcomputer back on?

The 220 Special had vertical reeds (like the 200), and single bowl carbs.

The 225 Excel had horizontal reeds (unlike the 200), and dual bowl carbs.

So, something has happened to that engine over the course of its life...

First, try to figure out what block and heads you have. That will tell you which carbs will work best.

How would I go about figuring out which heads I have? They are stamped 6k701.

From what I remember, the Excel heads were 6k700. I think 6k701 are heads from a 225B. I am sure someone here knows.

So, it seems like you have a 150 cowling, 220 Special carbs, 225B heads and Excel electronics...
