Trim Motor Going Bad?
I have a 3-ram trim on my '87 Merc outboard, that was actually taken from a Mariner (so it's grey), and it appears to have an after-market trim motor on it because the trim motor is a round ARCO unit. I'm posting here because the "up" trim is now starting to work intermittently. Juice is getting the "up" relay because when I hit the rocker switch at the control box I can hear the circuit close, but the motor doesn't engage. I checked all the wiring under the cowl and nothing is burnt or loose. Also, I've noticed that the motor isn't running evenly anymore. The RPM of the spin varies a bit and sounds kind of raspy. Is my motor going bad?

When it stops try tapping on the motor with the handle of a screwdriver while holding the switch. If it starts working its the motor. These motors have brushes that can stick. Had the same issue with mine. I bit the bullet & bought an oem replacement from Merc but when I took it out of the box first thing I saw was a dang made in China sticker! Not sure which would be better, after market or Merc. The oem def costs more. RR
