Given two equal engines, one with vertical front and one with horizontal, any rough guess what the difference would be in:
    1) low end torque, and
    2) rpm
    ?

If I had access to a mill I would probably cut some finger ports. I'm not going to try to do it by hand. I could probably do 5 good ones per block. No luck finding anyone who's willing to cut one for me...

Yea did the finger port thing way back, late 80s, on a Merc 2 liter , drilled holes in pistons etc, was running a tunnel on the circle track. Way more mid range not a lot extra at the top. Was lucky my machine shop had this old time mill that could drill all the angles, and an operator who knew his stuff. Even had a Merc six pack carb setup on it in the end. Should never of sold them.

Are finger ports the same as idle relief slots, or what are they? What are they supposed to do?

No, finger ports are an additional intake port, like a groove in the cylinder wall accompanied by another hole in the side of the piston. Idle relief slots are a raised portion of the exhaust port that bleed off cylinder pressure (more at low rpm than high due to piston speed) that helps smooth out engine idle.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm trying to understand the porting a little better. I have 2 V6's running now... a 1988 XR4 (2.4L) and a 1994 150 (2.0L). Have only been out in the 2.0L once so far, but is seems to idle and run really great. Maybe not as much torque as the XR4, but seems to idle better and does seem to want to run fast. It also does have the exhaust relief slots, but probably not the finger ports.

Not familiar with the "fat block" 2.0's. No consumer 2.0's had finger ports. Maybe some of the racing ones, I don't know. Your XR4 should have them though...
