the 1i saw was mill finish, if an add on, he was a hell of a welder., to say the least!

They really did't hurt anything, as long as the bore was smooth. Back then, when I first saw them, I freaked out too. Not a concern. Proof was, they ran for hundreds of hours, just like walls that had very few or none.
