Shortly thereafter the 175 2.0 was axed and the remaining 2.0 lineup was neutered to 150 and even 135 hp...
The vertical reed 200 2.4 chrome-bore was definately more horsepower than the 175. it was actually 205 h.p. at the powerhead.

I never said "de-rated". I said "re-rated". and they were rebadged to different horsepowers than the previous year, due to the industry's change from "gross" powerhead horsepower, or crank horsepower, to propshaft, or "net" rated horsepower, powerhead changes aside. I never mentioned the 225/200 powerhead design changes as I simply was stating gross to net h.p. year change. I am very familiar with the induction changes, as well as the many other changes on the 5-pedal reed cage 200's. there were many. left-hand gearcase availability, oil-injection, gearcase design change, intregal power-trim, and so on.

an mso is a manufacturer's statement of origin, for a boat. that name derived from the carpenters certificate, when only wood boats were produced. the early's 80's were very lucrative for both mercury and mercury outboard dealers. especially if you were a large horsepower motor dealer.

I've still got a coupla of 'em ina box somewhere.. no difference in re-rate and/or de-rate when its comparing a hp drop in my book but its a language thing and I was never good at English comprehension...

I got my answer and that's all good tha rest really doesn't mater and justa cloud anyway...

and yeah, know a little 'bout tha "wooden boat deal.. my first "hot rod" was a 14' jacket with a 45 on it!

there was an interim offshore only gearcase, that mercury delivered on the offshore 2.4's in the early 80's for 2-3 years, just prior to introducing the CLE. again, it had all stock 200 gearcase internals, as the previous offshore gearcases. it basically was a stock looking case with a slight bulge or very minor sized nose-cone frontal area. Chris Bush was instrumental in working with mercury in the final design of the CLE when introduced in eliminating blowout from his Mercury Mod-VP experience of the time.

tha one I had and remember was different.. no bulge. had a nose cone that was approx. 1 1/2 ta 2 inches at base (leading case edge) 4 ta 6 inches long coming to a very pointed point.. it was production merc of sort.. like someone said "a king size speedy".

know the cone. it was not merc. it was just a good add-on job. it was land & sea brand.
