I think it was 78... not sure.....I had a used on.... it was rotted out.....had the bad back cooling plate.... they still had the things on the sides of the block that looked like places to put on reed cages. They had light pistons.... prone to crack.

that's why I was thinkin' tha early 200's were 2.0 motors mainly cause of tha vertical fronts.. I do know tha tha horizontal didn't make it till '80 and only on 2.4's which was only in tha 7 petal that I actually saw, owned till tha 5 petal 200 in '82....

The one I had was on a fisn boat...un/painted block, 7 reed front, finger ported, and early style heads........ The first V6 200 I had bought.....many moons ago was a 1978? vert reed. old heads. and the early back plate. Like I said... the early ones had what looks like places on the side of the block where reed cages might have been put on for??????

Mercury was, has and I'm sure still does that stuff. CLE case is a great example of out of no where changes mid year production, end year.

    never any 2 ltr. 200's from merc. 1976 & '77 were 175's only. 1978, '79, '80, '81, '82 vertical reed 2.4 ltr. 200's. 1980, '81, '82 horizontal reed 2.4 ltr. 225's. in 1983-84, the 225 was re-rated to 200, the 200 re-rated to 175, the 175 re-rated to 150. in 1983-84 the two previous years mod-vp/offshore finger-port block porting became the new standard 200 merc v-6 block. 1978 thru '82 offshore gearcase, was a standard gearcase with a large but tapered water intake hole on both top sides of the nose area. CLE's(cresent leading edge) gearcases (mod-vp & offshore)came later.

agree with "almost all" of that except tha re-rated 225 to 200.. all 225s (80/81's) were 7 petal fronts.. never re-rated in that build.. never another 7 petal 200 till tha '91.. only tha 2.0's were re-rated to 150/135's...

I remember tha gear case well.. I liked 'em...back then.
