Finding which gear I am in with lower unit off?

I had to buy a used lower unit for my 1983 Mercury 115 EL(inline 6). Mine was cracked. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to find forward. The problem is I can find forward, reverse and neutral. I just can’t find all 3 close to each other. I don’t want to mount it then have to take it off to do again.

You should find FNR within a quarter turn of the shaft. Rotate clockwise from neutral to forward.

Is the shift shaft stuck? It should rotate.

It shifts fine. I’m just having a problem finding forward reverse and neutral together.

If you can find neutral the switch to forward or reverse is a very small move. Not finding them together may indicate an internal issue.
