Because there is not already enough **** under the cowl. I think we will see a migration towards electric steering across the board

I saw a aftermarket setup years ago on a triple fountain. Center engine had alternator replaced with power steering pump. I thought for sure this would become more commonplace. Electric just seems off to me, belt driven ps pumps are small and light compared to electric. Electric relies on mechanical energy to spin alternator to make juice, transfer thru wire than convert back to mechanical energy.

I need to find some blown motors as jigs to make a pump bracket.

Well we know mercury has not thought of that mechanical pump thing. An engine driven pump would rob more hp than an alt. And it's all about the hp number.

Where did they have the reservoir mounted in that setup?

I dont see a mechanical pump, reservoir, extra pulley, mounting brackets, larger cowl to fit it being lighter then the verado power steering now.

Been a long time. But I know the reservoir was not on the motor. Had to have been in the boat somewhere. The pump and bracket was smaller the alternator it replaced. They don't need to be very big.

I'd say your wrong on that. It still requires the same amount of energy input to do the job.

In an electric system you go mechanical to electric back to mechanical and have losses with each change. You skip those losses with a direct mechanical system

Late update but verado system is in the boat.
Very light hum noise heard since pump is under the helm.
Helm is large enough that I can crawl inside and sit up im 5'10" and 280 pounds.
Steering is about the same under low speed, but assist is great when turning above 20mph.
    Definately worthwhile updgrade.

OMC made an add on belt driven power steering pump and kit back in the early 90s. I had it on a BassCat Pantera with a 200XP Evinrude. Bolted right on the powerhead and fit under the stock cover. You didn't even notice it, unless you new it was there. It worked great! Just like driving a car with power steering. I think it cost about $600.00 back then.
