Skater 28 Hull

Don't know if it can run with a 28 Skater in the rough , but they will run very fast in normal Lake George Fl. chop. Added a couple pics of Porta Plate . I have been on the limiters with 38 5 Blades with 1.75 very 1st props tried and have just got a set of 1.60 to get of the limiters.

JPEROG, the DW28 will run in the same size water that the 28 Skater can?




Its a 28 foot boat. If you are looking for rough water running, the smallest boat is a 32. My 30 spectre took Lake Michigan conditions much better then my 28 skater and the new 308, 318 skaters and 32DW are capable of way more then anything in that size range. Bottom line for me is that its more size then I really need for where we run but will be good for going to other areas a few times a year. To answer your question, I think it will run in the same water that other 28s will but it will be more prone to tunnel slap "bottoming out" due to the tunnel width being a foot and half wider and the running surface being narrowed.

To Joe’s point about the costs, a bare hull 32’ Spectre, all composite, bagged, etc. can be had for $95k, roughly 1/3rd the cost of a bare hull Skater of equivalent size and still 1/2 what a new, bare hull 28’ Skater will cost you (yes, they will build a 28 but not quickly and not cheap) and it will still have wood transom and stringers.

The point is there are options very close to the cost of buying and restoring and old 28’ Skater.

I agree with u joe 100% on these new hulls
the technology with todays designs and composite materials
work of art with new looks and performance
we been building our own hulls here since early 80s
small drag hulls for unlimited class to my F1/2 tunnels I raced which were all composite cored Kevlar/carbon hulls
as I like building my own to match my driving style,,,,
as why restoring an older 28 to make it fit me and goals with it
so lucky enough to be up to date on materials and construction layup to not delaminate
skater hit a home run back then with the 28 and 40 and today are still good models
also agree in o/b cat 32'er and I/o 36'er is my ideal minimum size of cat choice
but the 32a was designed for the sb class back then so didn't perform as well with twin o/b but did good with tripps
these new hulls from DW have proven to be fast and stay together pleasure or racing
point I was stating was for less than 100k can have a fun boat that's still as fast as new hulls and ride the small slop
vrsing say 100k for new 28,140 for new 32 bare hulls than rig ,trailer,int,motors 200-300k
so don't understand when some1 states 75-100k for a older running turn key 28 skater is crazy
when alternative is get a loan for 250-500k for new
now new hulls 30,32,34,36 are fast and more stable as we know size means a lot in the rough
with todays new 450 motors mated to these new hulls ,,,,120+ is going to be common loaded speed on larger hulls
when black diamond 34mti 1st hit the poker runs ive been seeing its attitude in the slop last few yrs
and love to have 1,,,,,400-500 is just out of the spectrum for me,,,
the 28 is too small when wind/water gets snotty as where larger comes to play
I ride in a 40 at poker runs and when over 3s going to 5s rather not be out there anyways in the cats,,,lol
not every 1 can afford a new 28-36 o/b cat
not every 1 can afford a 24-28 old skater
as the old 30 spectre,,,great rough water boat,,,just was not fast with same power
I prefer it over the 32 spectre which is a modified 30
and those can be picked up for 50-60 running used
so just boils down to what u want and expect from it to be satisfied
my 28 is for weekday afternoon and local weekends to blast across our bay
its the right size for normal water conditions for me locally
but traveling to poker runs larger cat and vee is what I ride in

I simply love how the trends are bringing a lot of manufacturers to the table. If you are looking at <25' boats, there are several companies that for crazy money will build you one. When I see 22' boats going North of $120K... that is insane! Especially when I could buy a 38' Donzi ZSF for that kind of coin. I will build my Skater 24' and it will do the job of river, Keys and maybe a Poker Run here & there. Anything for larger water... I will go bigger to the >42' Vee bottoms for the safety and comfort. I recently picked up a 32' Fountain Fever and I will be cutting the engine compartment out, flat-decking the floors and breaking through the transom to add twin 450Rs, a Genset and AC for the cabin.

Pretty simple to me.
Lightweight hulls or boats equals a beating and most times out of control in the rough stuff.
In real 3-5' waters anything under 35' usually does not do well when running hard.

Beautiful boat !!!!! So how many DW28's are out there ?

There are 8 hulls, 3 rigged, and 3 in process and waiting for motors "mine being one of the three". One of them is a single that is getting a 450R. I am expecting to get another one started soon that will end up on the Fox Chain in IL.
