Ask this question on a OffShoreOnly, there you will have a bigger group that have done more of both types.

Do you think I could drive or throttle an offshore boat since I can drive an Allison? Or can any random guy from Offshore Only drive an Ally? It's all boats and all good fun. But sort of apples and oranges.

A small boat at 120 mph is large thrill on flat water but the skill required to do that is rather low compared to running an offshore boat in rough water. I have run 100 mph in true 6-8' waves in a MTI where I was driving and a offshore racer was working the throttles. I never understood why you need two people to drive a boat before that. After that experience I learned why it is truly a lot of work for both people. Flying the boat off a large wave for two seconds at 100 mph is about a football field in the air and landing flat on a well balanced boat is thrill beyond compare. It has taken me years to learn to drive in rough water like Lake Michigan or the Ozarks on Shootout weekend.

Whole different skill set and vision needed when the hull gets airborne. While running on the surface, you are in the moment. Get these things up in the air and you need to be 2 steps ahead of the game thinking about where you are going to land.

So equally engaging, but different skill sets? In my personal experience of running a 115mph Triad, I couldn't get it far over 75. It just felt like it was going to blow over/roll over/kill me. I would think that feeling would be absent on a giant 500k+ offshore boat, but again, I haven't been on one.

The big boats are faster and stupid money but they give you a false sense of security. In a 500lb 120mph boat All it takes is a surprise pontoon wake cruising at 4800rpm 90mph 54% throttle to give a pucker factor you can’t forget. Offshore or lake if you don’t know hopefully it warns u before it hurts you.

Yea No PROBLEM operating a foot pedal in those conditions!! Or hell use throttles only need one hand on the wheel.. hell with two hands its hard enough in that
People keep talking about how easy it should be but have they even tried?
And talking about a motor w basically cruise controls no that's not racing.Last edited by mrichartz; 08-23-2019 at 11:15 AM.

there was one guy that raced offshore, that insisted on controlling both steering and throttling himself, via a foot throttle, while standing up. he bragged about breaking most all the bones in his body in racing. he's dead now. he died in '92. (p.s.- he still insisted on one or two others along with him for safety)
