As always, w/me....., maybe, but your observation is accurate based on common perception.
My STV River Rocket had a ‘95 225 looper on it when I bought it.
Maybe the only stock OMC powered boat known to man that ran a 100.
Rumors were that motor was really a Second Effort motor.
When I bought it, and it ran 99 GPS w/a 29” SRX @ 7400 w/the VRO intact, air box intact, closed exhaust etc no one believed.
One of my OMC buddies said he’d buy the head gaskets if I pulled a head and mic’d the ports
I had my 3.3 project in the works already so I decided to use that one for a mule and see what it would put up with on bolt ons.
Imagine my disbelief when switching the factory 225/mid bore carbs to big bores and saw the hated “tea cup”, worst intakes on that motor!
Turned a 29 SRX 7400 w/them!
I then bolted on big bore carbs, the “good” intakes, reeds, no air box, open exhaust etc.
It then became fun and still hadn’t scattered.
I then shoved a shop vac up the exhaust and widend and raised the exhaust ports w/o tearing the p. head down...., and it worked
At that point the old 2.7 heads were starting to get hard to come by so I looked at the **** 3.0 heads on that motor and decided I could make them work.
I cut .100” off them and my own taper to the chamber.
Al said they wouldnt work as you remove too much meat for them to be able to dissipate the heat.
I of course, did it anyhow.
He was right.
They worked if you were spot on on your tuning but under heavy load....., good luck.
Before I parted that motor, it went to Fla, La, Oh etc, and pissed off a bunch of people.
It had the worst matched ports, worst casting flash etc.
Made no sense.
Would turn a 24” drag 8300 and took a strong 2.5 to get around it, and went 103 w/a Mazzco 30” SE 3.
I ran the much hated, killer of all OMCs, VRO oil injection until it passed the 8k mark

I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Happy to report
Okay, here are the results of my test. All I did was take the heads off my 86 200 XP, yes the good ones, stuck them on my 89 225. The compression went from 90 to 110. That's all I did, no rejetting, no shaving the heads, just put the heads on with new head gaskets and cleaned everything up.Took it out today. Last year I struggled to hit 50 miles per hour . today I easily hit 56. I could feel the difference immediately. This thing put you back in your seat now when it takes off. I know I need to get the tach fixed it was really dumb to go out with it not working but it's screaming pretty well. I'm pretty sure I can go from a 21 to 23 pitch and get a few more mph is out of it. It was a bit choppy so it was a quick run to 56 without even getting it fully trimmed out and the Jack plate lifted all the way up. I'm sure on a calm day I could wind it out a few more RPMs and probably hit 58 with all the trim settings right. I am extremely happy with this. Dying to get that 23-pitch prop from Amazon to try it out!

You need to go up a couple of main jets or you’ll burn it down.
Another cheap upgrade is the newer style (I think 96+), lighter, less restrictive air box.
Will also need more main jet.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I was wondering that. That was really my only concern and thought that maybe I should do. I saw some of the comments saying just don't run it without the airbox. I have that on. Still think I should up the Jets? I'll keep a look out to see what I can find, I think they are forty-sevens in there? Don't remember I just looked the other day but I'll see if I can find other ones. Have any? Thanks for the input.

I'm not sure what I'm looking for..There are plain 47 jets in the high speed now...what would you suggest? I was just looking online but when I look for 51 all I see is 51D which arent the same type... I need whatever you think I should put in them with the 2.7 heads on this 1989 225.. I see this chart shows the jet sizes...probably need 50 or 53 ? Do you have a suggestion? https://www.marineengine.com/parts/t..._0437214_2.pdf

Your looking at the high speed jets behind the big brass screw? Not talking down just trying to make sure because they are supposed to be D. And look like this
Can order from boats.net they have almost all in stock but are taking a long time to ship
I have some I'll sell depending on size most likely have what your looking for.
You want to most likely go up two sizes from stock for the bump in compression? But will obviously have to check pistons to see how it's running ..that its not lean or to rich
Ask Gary or racer to be positive... But that's what it's supposed to be..
If you don't have D main jets need pics off carbs etc because something isn't right.Last edited by mrichartz; 07-03-2020 at 01:01 PM.

Ok...sorry, you are correct...I was looking at the ones on the front of the carbs for idle.. I will have to double check the main high speed ones.. Do you have those in 64 D?

Would you sell 6 of them? May as well just go with those and see how it works.. What do you want for them? I may have some in other carbs..I have a bunch of other carbs sitting around but not sure if they have those jets..

Are you going to change airbox?
If you use a less restrictive air box you have to go up a little bit with jetting too one or two sizes on top of the other two sizes to begin withLETS GO BRANDON.... LETS GO BRANDON
