    Rebuild Time?

How long before its time for a rebuild on 1983 Merc 2.4L 200? I ran it 10 years last time and crank broke.. Would you go by compression readings?

Compression and leakdown. For the most part. But the reciprocating assembly is a bit tougher to evaluate. You can spin it over by hand and see how smooth it is. Check for piston rod bearing slop. etc. Pull the heads and look at the cyl finish....

If you don't have to pull the heads to check the cylinder wall finish - because you have a nice hole in the block to see it through - it would also be time for a rebuild.
