    Short Shaft Conversion

I have a project to attempt to complete before end of boating season.

I'm converting a 2000 Mercury 125 HP 2 stroke 2+4 from long shaft to short. I'll call it a short shaft "kit".

I'll need (if someone here has these):

    Short shaft drive shaft - 22.5 inches : Mercury P/N 45-43031A1 or A4
    Short Shaft Shift Shaft
    Short Shaft Water Tube
Short Shaft Drive Shaft Housing: Mercury P/N 898289A49

I'm not certain these exact Mercury P/N are for short shaft..

    Preferably all used..

    Thank you all..

MErcury did not make these motors in a short shaft ( 15") . in fact no short shaft motors( 15 ") were made after 1978 with the last of the 1500XS motors. Production motors ceased being available in 15 " lengths in 1975 ( i THINK )

Assuming you mean switching to a short shaft means going from a 20" mid to a 15" mid.

I understand these days some people call the 20" mid a "short shaft" sinse so many motors are made in 25 and 30 inch lengths as well.

Tom,even though we effectionately call a 15 inch motor a"short shaft",it's not the factory description.15 inch is standard, with no model number notation,20 is L(for long),25 Xl (extra long),30 XXL.As of 1980 any boat that was rated for 40 hp or more had to be made with a 20 inch transom,so the market for large 15 in motors was gone.Lots if 15 in motors being made, bur below 40 hp,Chris

If you are going from 25 inch to 20 inch..... Just remove the spacer. The shift shaft is longer in the gear case as is the Driveshaft. You will need shorter studs .... That's it. The water tube on old motors is long.... the newer one have a plastic spacer. If you need any of these parts I have the Good used.
