    Force/Chrysler

A guy calls a couple days ago to tell me he had just got his boat from a marina that had done a carb rebuild and motor would not run. Charged him $500 and it was worse than before. I noticed a massive amount of gunk around the prop so figured lower seal was out. Hooked up hose and started it. Ran very rough and once timing was removed it would die instantly. Black crap puddled under lower so I thought maybe lower seal was ok it was just loaded up with gas from before the carb rebuild. Since carb had just been rebuilt I removed fuel pump to see if diaphragm was torn and dumping fuel into crankcase. Fuel pump was fine so I removed carb and to my surprise found it was missing the main jet and inlet needle had a huge groove in it. So much for the $500 rebuild. I took a jet out of an old Chrysler 115 Charger and it ran but still very rich. What I need to know is what would be the correct jet for a 1996 Force 40. I can get the needle from Pro Marine but I doubt they have the jet plus I need to know the correct size. Any info appreciated and more importantly if someone has the correct jet I would definitely like to buy it. The 115 Chrysler Charger I stole the jet from is in need of one piston and I would trade entire motor for the correct jet. Thanks

Gosh, so did the guy call the marina and give them an earful? Charging $500 for a single carb rebuild is highway robbery as it is but to also screw up one jet and totally lose the other is salt in the would.

I was kind of thinking the same. I mean, I am all for free market capitalism. If I had someone that would pay me $500 to rebuild a carb, I would have tested it on the water and made sure it ran at least as good, if not better then when it left the factory. To charge that much and screw it up is a sin.

I am part of a Corvette Caravan that is getting together in Bowling Brook next week.
I might be able to change my course, but would not be able to be there with a boat.

When he told me $500 I almost puked. The thing only has about ten parts and that's counting gaskets. There are not many in this area working on these things and I am about done so it's only going to get worse. How someone can take a man's money without getting the job done is beyond me.
