after you posted another pic on your other post don't believe that to be a cle?.. looks ta be early factory.. does it have for better words, a "trough" on both sides that look like it will better water direction to tha little inlets?.... if so it probably came on tha original motor/clamp/down housing.

that serial number doesn't come up as mod-vp.. doesn't even come up as hi perf.. jus 2.4 (merc. site).. but its definitely early hi perf efi..

mod-vp... efi.. they did in tha '87 horn motor.. don't know 'bout tha earlier up-draft?

I'll be the first to admit I don't know everything. I'm usually not surprised by Mercury V6 outboard stuff but there's not any hi-po stuff around here. Somebody school me on the "updraft" front...

look at tha pics of his motor.. pre horn tha front plenum has a big hole and throttle plate on tha bottom for air intake... sucks air "up" thus tha "up draft".. its sometimes mistakenly called a down draft..

I don't remember any efi's back then (pre horn) being tha oval port?.. later, anything with tha bleed stuff could have been either and no way ta tell from outside appearance that I recall.. don't remember much about tha "hot rod" oval port (efi and carb) till around '87 up...
if they didn't have bleed nipples at cyl's 99.9% chance of it bein' a BP as tha oval port is really justa naked production block..

they also built a "formula" motor that was seven petal carb BP that gets mistaken for a mod-vp... its not a well known motor...

think that one will be either tha efi or tha 5 petal carb motor maybe?.. tha seven petal carb came straight off tha "TRUCK" (like tha laser injected BP).. was originally a lefty, powerhead only... been a very long time ago...….

My 85 Mod VP doesn't have bosses on the top cylinder and its "naked"
If I don't ask any questions, I'll never learn anything.

Have had A few of these Engines that resemble this Block
All were what has been identified as an updraft.
They all were single Port 2.4 liter
Ran extremely well with the 2 liter Race box on them
This particular block if memory serves has been painted also
    Did not start out Painted
