[SOLVED] Sporadic miss at idle/low, smooth at mid-high?
solved
1987 2.0l 150...
My otherwise good running 1987 2.0l 150 has developed an occasional miss after a few minutes at idle. But it goes away and runs smooth at mid and higher power settings. It accelerates from low to high quickly and smoothly, without stumbling or hesitation, even if it’s missing at idle.
Other notes:
1) some of the wires from the stator or timer base are of that rubbery noodly texture. They’ve been like that for a few years still running fine, before the miss. The miss is new as of a couple of weeks ago.
2) I’m willing to “throw money” at the problem buying parts as long as I have some guidance as to the “most likely” culprits.
So what are y’all’s best guess, in order, of the most likely culprit for a low-power-only miss?Last edited by pcrussell50; 06-04-2022 at 04:32 AM.

Stator, but check anything you moved while doing other work.

Stator is good culprit but again. Not to long ago I had switch box that would mis fire 1 cyl and clear up and fire all 6 after 1500 2k rpm , you can "throw " lots $$$ at lectrics , better to least test stator and trigger

Great info guys thanks.
Carbs clean and re gasketed with brand new Chris Carson reeds last summer, have maybe ten hours on them. I will re visit those as a last resort.
I ordered a new Quicksilver stator and will try that first. At the very least, The wires coming off the one I’m using right now have turned into that “rubbery noodle” feel so that was bothering me even when it was idling smoothly.
Remind me what is the “trigger” in Merc talk? The timer base?
I will I’ll for sure fire it up in the dark with the covers off. That’s how I figured out a maddening miss on my track car (a bad/broken plug was causing the spark to jump out of the boot and straight to the block).

Sorry for the triple post. I’m in Shanghai and they mess with their data networks here. Spontaneous stops and throttling. Bit of a pain.

Ok, so I put on a new Mercury/Quicksilver stator and fired it up on the muffs. Have not been to the lake yet. Going today in an hour or so.
Anyway, it fired right up and immediately it was idling too fast and I had to do the idle adjustment all over again. On the muffs it was hard to tell if the miss was better, but I'm assuming that since it was immediately idling faster and needed adjustment again, that it might be because the idle miss went away. Does this sound plausible?

Yes that's very likely , did u have to idle it up at sumpoint cause of the miss?

Idle timing is pretty normal adjustment with fresh stator more so if you also did trigger. Worth checking max as well and carb idle adjustments
