Intermittent full power
I have a 1985 200 Black Max and have had intermittent issues with the motor running clean at lower power settings. The engine would sound weak and will not produce it's typical power but, once the power was brought up to near full throttle, it would kick in, hard, and would spool up to 6000 rpm with no issues. Sometimes it's running fine at a lower power setting and will revert back to running weak. Once power is applied to near full, it's back to running strong. I usually run Ultra 94 fuel and worst case scenario 91. I'm thinking this is electrical and not fuel related but, I'm at a loss at where to start looking. Has anyone witnessed this issue?

Try running it off of a different fuel source...gas can with premix (babysit things) and see if the problem persists. I had some issues with my OE fuel pump being unable to draw enough suction to open the anti-siphon valves on the tanks at lower RPMs. Get a buddy in the boat sitting next to the primer ball and next time it starts crapping out have him see if the ball is firm or soft....if firm, push in the key to activate the primer...if things improve, it's fuel....if not, likely ignition and start testing the stator and switchboxes...or just replace them if you haven't yet, since their 35 years old.
