Mercury Mod VP Bridgeport overheating and possibly fake???

Just bought a Shadow 200VT bass boat with a mercury mod vp. I’ve seen the mod vp on google images and the decals are green I think (I’m a tad color blind). But my decals are blue. Is it possible that blue decals were put on at the factory to look better with the blue boat? And also the temp gauge was about half way up and I thought ok if it goes up anymore I’ll shut it off and use the trolling motor to get back. It went almost all the way up. I heard if you turn off a hot engine it won’t start up very easy. So I shut it off and cranked it back up super fast (as it always does). Acted fine. It runs fantastic I’ll jusy say that. Possibly just a bad gauge or something??? I’ll attach a photo if I know how. Thanks!!

Not factory decals for that cowling. Take a pic of the powerhead with the cowl off and maybe we can tell if it’s actually a ModVP

Actually, I have a feeling it’s a blackmax. Have to look tomorrow though.

what color is the powerhead? If it aluminum colored it's a hi-po motor, if black it's a fishin' motor...

something like bass pro tracker by mercury stickers, skeeter champ or one did a merc packaging

thats if if I remember things correctly from way back.

So you think it could’ve came from the factory like that? Maybe an option for the blue to compliment the blue boat? Seems logical to me but idk

If it’s a true ModVP I think I’ve got it figured out. From the looks of the cowl I can tell it’s definitely been painted so I think someone just maybe had the decals or bought them to replace the old ones. Either way I like the look of it. Now if we can figure out the overheating

Hard to tell from pics, but it looks like a one piece plate, but with t-stats, pull the covers off the top of the heads where the hoses are and see if there's thermostats behind there

    is gone

That’s sorta good news!!! The gauge is 32 years old so I think I’m gonna replace that first then see if that’s the problem and not the engine because I just don’t see how it was overheating as good as it was running. Ran fine all the way to the ramp also. What’s your opinion?
