Prop stuff
Hi all,
To a prop pro,
So Im a bit confused on Mercury Props.. I know choppers from a time long ago. Now theres Mirage, Vengeance, Silverado, ect..
I know some maybe 3 blade and some 4 blade. I read there are performance differences specifically top end.
What are the differences between the 3 blades, besides cost?
I sold all my high performance stuff (MODVP, props, gearcases and more). I have a Pontoon, which I rotisserie restored. I placed
a 2000 125 2+4 that is what I believe an old pacemaker motor. Compression is 147 all 4. Anyway, I run 37 MPH (GPS) with a Solas
13 1/4 x 18 sometimes bumping the REV limiter. I swung a Solas 13 1/4 x 17 (35 MPH - GPS), turned out it was not enough pitch. My thoughts are that the Solas 13 1/4 x 18 maybe a bit too much, so I'm thinking a 13" x 18" Stainless, attempt to turn the 18P same RPM's as the 17P. Neither of these props slip.
So, my question is, why would the solas provide more performance than the Vengeance, Turning Point, Turbo, Black Max? (I tried them all). Perhaps the Solas has a higher rake? Cupping seems the same througout all the models.
Would I benefit from a Mirage, Silverado? I haven't tried these as they are cost prohibiting.
Thanks...

What does it say on the barrel between the blades? Any part number or words? Could be a Vengeance.

I think your correct, looks like a Vengeance. Are they any good? Average?

If the solas bumps the rev limiter sometimes you’re gtg.
Other prop would just change the attitude stern lift bow lift ect just like a boat.
Solas believes in cupping even aluminum tends to give them good grip.
Going to stainless sometimes you you have to drop an inch or two, fire to weight and cupping.

Thank you..
I bit the bullet and purchased a (what appears to be) good used Vengeance. This is a 13"D x 18"P. I have a power lift to provide to me the ability to lower the motor an inch or two below the running surface of the POD. That is, the cavitation plate below. Running the Solas high enough to bump against the REV limiter, I spend most of my running time watching water pressure, I am on the cusp a few ticks up and I am out of pressure, so Im running to what I believe is about as good as it gets. Because I'm never satisfied, I'm going to give the Vengeance a spin. Never have I tried a stainless, so I'm not certain the dynamics will work but to be determained. Perhaps what you wrote is fact of the matter in regards to the Solas and I have read too that I may need to run a bit lower with the Stainless, which I can do. All that said, since this restoration (including calculations of center of gravity, POD relocation) my goal was 40MPH.. I'm hoping the 13 x 18 will hit that mark (1/4" less diameter). So, can you share with me the characteristics of the Vengeance? Would this prop, in your opinion create additional bow or stern lift? I say Bow or Stern lift as pontoon. Or, I'm soon to find out...
Thanks again..
Regards

Hi all,
Just so we know..
The Vengeance is 5 MPH slower than the SOLAS. Tested today.. Actually the SOLAS 35.8 MPH, the Vengeance 30.6..
The Vengeance $465.00 - the SOLAS $89.00
Thats not sitting well with me right now.

I can't for the life of me make sense of this. Logistically, the stainless should have been a better performer at least by 2 to 3 MPH.
I imagine the SOLAS has something the Vengeance does not. I hope this info helps others looking to "upgrade" thier prop and spend
hundreds to do so.
I'm sticking with SOLAS props especially for the money.

The vengeance is a stainless version of the aluminum prop. Other then being stainless it offers no additional benefit over the black diamond. Its an entry level, does nothing well, prop.
The mirage was originally a stern drive prop and likes heavy loads and low height. The Silverado is the quicksilver version of the vengeanceLast edited by RSWORDS; 08-04-2019 at 09:32 AM.

Well maybe the "flex" if the alum prop is helping on the slip #s and speed ? Without that flex maybe added more slip=lower speed? Just thinkin out loud , never heard of a alum prop out performing a stainless,,,,,, all in set up,
