96 mercury 200 efi
Motor has been running good but I have had trouble with silenoid or a saftey switch. Today I was cruising across lake I came off plane and was idling in gear up toward my spot. Engine does and will not crank have to pull cowl and jump silinoid to start it. I am not sure what to replace or check. I know the silinoid would not make it stall. Could it be let switch or something else

I'd look at the switch for starters.

The problem is so intermittent it would be hard to diagnose. Most of the time at home I can walk out and turn the key and it will turn over. At the lake it may start at boat ramp it may not. I may start every time I try to crank it up. I may have to pull the cowling off everything I need to start it. I did bypass the neutral switch to make sure that is not causing the not starting thing

Corroded/loose/bad ground will cause all types of problems

If theres one key thing to learn here about electrical gremlins is there is absolutely no way to dream up of "this is it" you have to start somewhere as sensible as possible and eliminate modules and circuits until you find your issue. I went through a similar issue last year and was advised to start at the switch because its a bit common apparently. Grounds too absolutely critical and even a loose connection somewhere can cause this its not nec a failed part, could be loose/corded whatever but you have to go one lead at a time and prove each to be good. To test wires doa continuity test from one end to the other using a beeping meter is easiest.
If everything passes a quick visual and connections at bat tight/grounds etc. Id bring tools and be prepared for when the issue begins again and start at the key switch by hotwiring it. If it goes, switch likely, if not check leads, if not dig deeper etc etc etc. You'll get there, it takes diligence and timeHydrostream dreamin
