Lets see, 100 MPH BOATS with DRIVERS having too much to drink, then the big crash, first person to call is the ambulance to get the drivers to the hospital, second person is the drivers attorney who says we dont get paid till you get paid. Hay it was fun but it was a ticking time bomb and we decided to quit. please dont bash us for having the good sense to call it quits . But it was a hoot.

In the early yrs I had a website for the Rumble.
Had a page to volunteer to help.
The 2nd yr, 1st yr in Carrollton, I had 6 volunteers w/boats signed up for patrol boat duty.
This was huge for me.
By 2 wks before the event, every one of them backed out.
That yr I did 3 days in a row on 3 hrs of sleep.
That was the yr w/the Make a Wish kids though and God humbled those of us paying attention.
A life lesson I will never forget.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

The picture of the little boy with glasses sitting on Lake Trash's lap driving the boat priceless tore a hole in me. For what you Gary and Racer did that was above and beyond and one hell of a good time. Thanks

So here’s a question then. I’m sure city officials and such have all changed, or retired by now, you guys don’t wanna do it anymore... if someone was to wanting to start a river run/ poker run type event, would you guys be opposed?

Tony and Gary did an amazing job keeping (most) people in line while running the event(s). Thank you both for all of your hard work!
My dad and I used to make it a 1 week vacation. We'd get in early and be the last to leave. I had a ton of fun and met tons of really great people during those events!
Although I have no idea what it takes to run an event of that size, I'd be willing to help out in some capacity. If it gets revived I'd attend for sure.Last edited by wing nut; 07-15-2019 at 12:22 PM.

Those were the days.
Had a great time meeting the folks and riding those 2 make a wish kids in the boat parade is a memory I will
always have. I kind of know how much work Gary and his guys put in and I thank them for it.

I was there the first couple years at Carrollton and it was one of the best events of its kind that I've ever attended....they did such a good job getting the local folks involved and there was so much going on..... Ken Warby, air show, free beer and pizza, water cops making passes in their patrol boats and on and on.... great people.

I was Commodore and a board member of the Northern Illinois Offshore club for many years. The amount of work involved in putting on events like our Shootout, Fun Runs and Poker Runs is crazy hard. We would spend $2000 on insurance and $600 on Directors insurance and we were incorporated for further protection from lawsuits. We needed Waterway permits, Coast Guard permits and the Water cops had to be on board with the event. Often times we involved the local cities or county. I cringe when I see people put on an organized event even if it is free the liability is tremendous to the organizer if something happens. Even simply putting up a post stating we are getting together on Sunday a 10AM for a run is a risk. A lawyer would state that is an organized event. So a lot of unpaid work and lot of personal liability is the reason many more events are not held.

I watched Mark grow the "Smoke on the Water" poker run from nothing to major and then a couple of guys got killed and it destroyed him financially and aged him tremendously. This was with what he was told "excellent coverage". I agree with Brad, we are living in such a litigious society and everyone is looking to "get rich quick" that its hard to get excited about this stuff anymore without the downside over shadowing the enthusiasm and passion. 25 years ago an attorney that bought a billboard with a customers face saying ------got me $600,000.00 was considered arrogant and taboo-today its half of Lamars business.

I completely understand all the concerns. I was curious what had ever happened to it - what I read is what I figured and that it became too big for the help that was willing to put it on. I was hoping it would have been cancelled for other reasons which hopefully would have gone away by now so that the event could come back. Thanks for what you guys did - definitely seems to have a positive legacy from the stories I've heard.

Was not a help issue at all , we pretty much had all that worked out the last few events we had.Was totally a LIABILITY decision at least on my part. Also to the ones who want to have some kind of gathering at carrollton the city requires you to have insurance on the event before you can use the facilities at point park. also permits from ky water patrol and also us coast guard. The coast guard was the fun one, it took me 6 months and many phone calls to get and then they show up sat morning at 8 am sharp to see if we had everything in order. They are no fun to work with at all . good to here from Wing nut, tell your dad kathy and I said hi.
