1975 checkmate mx15. Mercury 140 hp inline 6 cylinder.
1975 checkmate mx 15. Mercury 140 hp inline 6 cylinder. Very good condition for the year. Garage kept since new. Original owner is very good friends with my father and lives 5 minutes from me. The boat has never left this town(ownership). I purchased it from the 3rd owner who owned it since 1991. Has original seats in it, which are like new. I put a new power trim unit in( old was leaking) new wiring harness from motor to gauges. Custom made aluminum fuel tank. Trailer is a 1987 painted, no rust with new wheels and tires. Brand new faria matching gauges go with it. 26 pitch chopper, has original snap on cockpit cover, and full cover. Top deck nose could use clear coat. Has some scratches (its 44 years old). Motor does not have alot of hours, previous owner said he only put about 25 hours on since 1991. Sat in his heated garage. This is a true survivor in great shape and ready for the water checkmate fans! I purchased a tunnel, only reason im selling. $2500. Call 610-360-1513

Holy smokes, is that a short shaft? Bet it was the king of the lake where it ran, till the first V-6's showed up
It's been eons since I've seen those factory tabs (FJ circle racers used to clip off the outboard corner of the left-hand tab, so it wouldn't drag )
What speeds do you get out of it?
If this weren't at the opposite end of the country, I'd pretty much have to buy it, "just because".
It's sure a nice survivor <3

This is bad ass boys.
I caught the tabs too.
I restored a ‘69 30 yrs ago and couldn’t find those tabs then.
A true time capsule.
The baddest of the bad from that era.
If I hadn’t just bought another bike 2 days ago.....
Way cool pc.
Good luck w/the sale.
We need a go pro video from whoever buys it.
PS, boat was built 45 mins from my house.Last edited by Instigator; 07-12-2019 at 02:49 AM.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Oh wow - now there's a conversation piece!! How cool!
As to the LU: pretty sure that is just a bullet housing, with the stock 2.00:1 gears and guts intact. The lower unit up until the late-'73 model run was not the most efficient shape. The bullet shape would help that.
Everybody who was interested in the most performance called it a "club foot". They made a design change in '73 that was much more hydrodynamic. As the speeds got well into the 70's, everyone's worry around about this point in time was "blowout"
This is where my memory is a little foggy... I was 15-16 at the time, and my mind was fixated on girls and where I could nab a few cans of beeeeeer But I think that gearcase swap of one production case to another was a legal change you could make to an existing engine in OPC racing. But the "bullet" cases were not. I remember seeing guys in '72 who played around with a spring-loaded swing-down bullet case front, that attached to the boat and not the engine, just capped the front of the gearcase. Not sure how well it worked. As I say, by mid-'73, it was remedied by the factory.Barry

MX-14, nice!!! I'll bet that was a handful
rbeersy's motor being a short would help the handling a LOT.
At higher speeds, having too much lower unit in the water did not help these boats at all.
Back around that time, a couple guys (brothers) from Columbus who we used to hang with had a '70 MX-14 with an older 1000 (was a '66 or '67).
They ran a long shaft, blocked up a little, because they liked to ski with it. It was, well, "a bit squirrelly" with all that weight in the back and being a long shaft.
In '72, they traded up for an MX-15 with a 1400, but again, a long shaft with PT.
Because the older brother had the hots for my buddy's older sister, he let my buddy and myself take his boat out a few times.
Quite a reach considering that, while we both had boats our entire (very young) lives (his pop was a boat dealer), I was all of 14 yrs old and he was 12
It was great fun, with that boat being a serious upper-60's runner. But even with trim, it had a serious tendency to pitch around and chine walk.
Getting the engine up or having a short would have helped that immensely But dammit, it was a doggone barrel of fun!!!
Sorry, didn't mean to hijack, but I have a serious love for these boats. The Downard/Combs families had longtime, skilled folks building these boats. They were always hand-layup, and I remember them advertising their "Belco Balsa" construction, but I never remember them having the issues that seemed to plague Hydrostream around that timeBarry
