2.0 versus 2.5
Is there any reliability advantage of the 2.0's verses the 2.5's because of the thicker cylinder wall?

I'll go out on a limb here and say the 2.0 can take a beating and run forever , 2.5 is great to but I gotta say 2.0 last longer imo

Tune and maintenance are what make a two stroke run strong and live long. Neglect either and it only takes a second to burn one into a dud. Iron lined engines are easier to rebuild because they can be over bored where nickel/chrome you must replace the liner which is far more costly. From what I have seen and learned ALL the V6 Mercs are reliable in good tune shape especially if left stock. Mods and lean tune ups chasing power are responsible for more melted Mercury aluminum than any 2.0 vs 2.5 differences.

2.0 will last longer especially in a high rpm application. Pistons are lighter and put less strain on the crank and bearings!

I've heard the 2.0 is pretty reliable. I have a block waiting to get fixed. #1 went lean and melted the piston. My winter project is to build that up and keep as a spare powerhead or find a little 17 action for it

2.0 has a extra thick cyl wall which is why they can take such a beating , and if it does go , they most likely can b bored without sleeves , just a all round good mota. I'd buy one again n heart beat , with mod plans ov course haha. I'd love have me a finger ported 2.0 for the little checkmate , but again that's quite bit$$$$ for those mods , unless get a champ mota .. hope I'm not mistaken but which is only 2.0 fingerported

The 2.0 champ motor is a mini 2.5 with a bridged exhaust..without the low end torque...the party starts at 5000 rpm. The fishing 2.0 is ported different and takes a lot of work and need 180-200 lbs of compression.

I've seen some with work, I think you built a couple right? Called tubers with the tubes in the block. I'm assuming since mine is a later one based on a 2.5 block, it is not quite the same as the earlier style. What needs to be done to it to make like 175+ hp. It is a spare block so I'm wanting to learn a little more about them. It would go on a light hull that doesn't need the torque like my flats boat needs. I have a 2.5 200 for that one.

Cut heads to 150psi(I don’t rember the cc’s in a 2.0 off the top of my head but I THINK 28cc’s is it. )
2.4 200 bell tuner and wh-22 carbs imo will get you where you want to be
16 amp flywheel for high rpm.
The amount of time mine has spent north of 7k can probably be counted in years, not hours lol.
Its an 87’ Xr2, got warranty rebuilt when oil pump died, hasn’t been apart since.

26cc is supposed to be the magic number for the 2.0
