OMC lower died. Info needed pls.

Crunchy and rattling noises from my lower. Need advice on options. 2000 225 Johnson 20" counter rotating. Nose coned. Don't know what years swap, who rebuilds them. If counter rotating uses different gears and parts (assume so) etc. I am in SW Florida. Any help is appreciated. PaulO

Looking for options. One rebuilder says he cannot guarantee a counter rotating lower unit as according to him "they suck and omc never corrected the problem". Mine are nose coned and run high up on a cat hull. Is this going to be an ongoing problem? Opinions encouraged. Thanks. PaulO

I am guessing this is on a twin since it's a CR..so you need to match it to whatever righty you are running...same gearcase style and gear ratio...
Leftys are completely different inside than rightys...

Yes twins on a 23 daytona. Both nose coned with lwps. Don't know gear ratio. wondering if these are inherently bad units (the cr ones)

This guy is known for building OMC's, figure he might know something about lower units.

They are not inherently bad gearcases...If they are run as they were intended they are pretty good units, lefty or righty....run very high with wot in and outs is rough on them...or any gearcase...

One local guy is telling me that the cases are flawed and that the components are all different from the standard rotation. Also says that the opposite end of the carrier is loaded on a lefty and that there is less support for that gear/shaft. Any of this true? Just trying to be careful here. Thanks again.

except for very early loopers that fired the motor backwards, leftys are spun the same direction as rightys...this makes the back gear the forward gear in a lefty...to make it live the big forward thrust bearings are in the carrier instead of the nose ...so the rightys and leftys share a few internal parts, but are mostly different...same with any brand lower...2000 johnsons should be a magnum which are pretty good gearcases...if your running omc then you don't have much option ...without adapting a sporty or something...
