Here the age old question (Again)

    Ill make this quick.
    Merc OB 225 Hp Carb'ed 5500..WOT.

Looking for a "starting point" prop.
Will purchase alum until I get this fine tuned.

Looking for somewhere in the middle speed/performance.
From my research, 14"-15" Diameter 18-26p.
Any one manufacture better preforming then others?
From one manufacture to the next they say there props are the best.

Actual Experience is better than any book!!
    Thanks in advance!!
If you think this is fun, wait til next weekend!

One thing to know that is very important, what boat will it be on?

What are you looking to do with boat, load with people and gear and cruise, or you some fuel and scream and fly?

And FWIW, I would not waste my money on an aluminum prop, especially for 225 hp. Look at Craigslist, Ebay, classifieds here for used ones. Best if you can find somebody close that is willing to loan, sometimes marinas do this to help you find the right prop for your boat.

Good advise SS..... I should have put pics of the boat in the 1st post, as it is a DIY boat, based off of Hal Kelly 70's tunnel hull.
    Here's a look @ all 4 corners.

If I were in your shoes, I would start with 14.5 dia. 30 pitch three blade mercury cleaver or lightning ET. The cleaver will have more transom lift but both have proven to be very well mannered on a multitude of hulls. My guess is that you have a 1.87 gear? Take some video to share-

Are you planning to put on a 225 3 liter on that boat?

Thanks for the reply JP. I will definitely look into that.....on the gearing?. I really not sure. How can I find this information out?
And yes Turborr, 225 Hp. carb'ed 3.0. Actually, already mounted. I need to get it out of the garage
    to get more pics.
This tunnel hull has NEVER been in the water yet. Shooting for 2 weeks to get wet! Waiting on a few parts.
Has for video, I'm getting ready to order a Go Pro just to do that.
I have a lot of testing in the water before I get to crazy.
If you think this is fun, wait til next weekend!

A 3.0 motor is to heavy for that hull.

When I started building this over 6 years ago, from the plans I brought, I built the 1st bow rib, completed it and
was getting ready to start the 2nd rib.
At that time, I knew I wanted a big OB on this, that's when YOUR question/comment hit me. "This boat will not hold
that kind a weight." Researching the weight, anywhere between 400-600lbs for a 200-250hp OB. Not good!

So I closed up the garage, took the plans to my computer/CAD and drew this tunnel hull to scale.
Now having tunnel profile I can now calculate the square footage, and run the buoyancy formula.
We all know if the weight of the displaced water, weights more then the total weight of the boat (with everything on it and in it), it will float.
Knowing what weight I needed, I increased the profile until I got the numbers that were in my favor, + a little more for safety.
I ran those numbers many times and also had a friend @ work run them too.

So, its not to heavy, it will float, hp wise to big??? Maybe, but I don't have to run it WOT 100% of the time either.
The tunnel is true to the plans, only the sponsors have been modified with a larger abeam.
How well will it preform? I have no idea. But we will soon find out.
Oh and my OB has a 25"mid..that all in another post here, https://www.screamandfly.com/showthr...4-more-inches!
    Thanks for your input.

I think a 2.4 ....20 inch would be a lot for that boat......and a better choice......but do as ya will.......what ya got is what you got........3.0.

I think the concern is how the boat will handle with that much weight so high up.

I was think the same thing. I would rig it with a 115 inline and then move up as needed but that wasn't the question asked. It will be interesting to see some video and you have to commend a guy that builds his own hull.

There is a lot more to hull stability than just bouyancy. LCG, VCG, and inertia of weight in motion all play into it. I too commend you on the work you have done, just advise you to proceed cautiously and listen to the advise given by members here. Many of us have learned lessons the HARD way. No need for you not to benefit from lessons learned.

Thank guys, I appreciate the complement and input.
I did build this with stability in mind. Bring a pilot (airplanes, not professionally) stability is not new to me.
I did do lots of research before starting this project.
Although, experience can not be brought, that is one reason I am here. "The Unknown"
I did get the boat out of the garage and finished up paint. I am now waiting on my rub rail, overfill gauge for fuel tank, and vent.
I do need to take it to a shop, OB started right up but RPM went through the roof.
Also, as suggested earlier, maybe in another post, I might need to change mid. From what I seen on some video, that's a huge job to remove and replace.
Ill attach a photo, from what I have learn from here , I think the OB is to low.
