Mercury xri ECU fuel pump bypass

I have a 1995 XRI 150 that is not sending a signal to the fuel pump when ignition is on. I had a negative lead come lose from my battery causing this issue to start, it also fried my tach. I have read there is a way to bypass the ECU, I have read a couple different ways that people have done it, I would like some opinion on the "correct" way to go about this.

    Thanks!

Buy a 30 amp relay , connect positive of fuel pump to relay and continue from relay to positive of battery Next connect negative on pump to negative on battery , find keyed switched hot PURPLE wire from key switch harness to relay using it as your exciter wire . When key is off relay opens killed power when key is on relay is excited and closed starting pump I’ve hooked lots of them that way when fuel pump circuit is not working on ECU .

The wiring diagram is right there on the relay! Not to be an a$$, but if you can't work with that, you should really take it to someone who can. Some things shouldn't be left to YouTube, an electrical fire in a fiberglass boat is no bueno.

I have done plenty of electrical, I have simply not wired in a relay before. With some simple guidance it would be an easy install, I am looking for someone to say this goes there this goes there and bingo, "so I get it right." Maybe with all your wisdom you could do this rather than being judgemental towards someone and their situation you know very little about...

Like I said, not looking to be an a$$, sorry you took it that way, just looking out for your safety and that of people you have on board with you. The relay you are working with isn't even a marine relay, so things like water and gasoline fumes can easily get inside the casing and cause major concerns. (Read: unwanted thermal event)

A relay is simply a low amperage circuit controlling a high amperage circuit. Pins 86 and 85 are the low amperage "control" side. Switched power in on pin 86, ground pin 85. Pin 30 is your high amp fused input to the relay, pin 87 will be your load. 87a is where the high amperage side of the relay rests, you won't be using it so best to terminate that wire so it doesn't short anywhere.

Thank you for that, I appreciate the input and concern of none marine relay. I will exchange for marine relay.

I come here for good advice for things I have the confindence to do on my own but lack the knowledge. I build houses for a living, not boats, but I am knowledgeable and love to learn. If I was not comfortable and thought it was unsafe I would not perform the job myself, I would never put my family or friends at risk.

I just wanted to say thanks Jay, with a little explanation of how the relay works I was able to easily install and get the fuel pump running. Also Idvette suggested a sealed relay unit which I used.

The motor dis not want to fire which is unusual for this 2.5 it has always fired up for me. I am hoping that I did not burn up my Ecu when the ground on my battery came loose last fall. I was unable to check for spark as I was at the boat with no spark tester and no one to check spark. What is the method to test Ecu and also stator?

    thanks

So, I went out to the boat today, lots of healthy spark. So I pulled the plugs and found all 6 to be bone dry. Put a little fuel in each cylinder and she fired right up until the fuel burnt off. I checked fuel pressure, it was good. My guess is the ECU is not send an injector pulse signal. Thoughts?

Sounds like good troubleshooting , just make sure availibility of fuel is there for the pump to pick up and pump when you turn on key listen and feel if pump is running . If it is remove brass plug under VST tank and check for fuel inventory there if not may be a bulb fuel lines or vaccume pump issue ...

    Good luck ,
    Jay

I cracked the fuel line in and out on vst, fuel both sides. Good pressure at the test valve. I am leaning towards in being no pulse signal from ecu to injectors? Can an air lock occur there, I am assuming not. Is there a way to test pulse signal to injectors?
