One could argue that the transition from 2 stroke to 4 stroke and working through the inherent weight issues is revolutionary but overall I think advances in marine propulsion have been mostly evolutionary for decades.

No brainer. We need a wider boat to fit 7 engines haha. I think 140k to spare on motors would be a good price in extra vessel footage/girth.

It's not meh but it takes a truck load of parts to achieve what is easily possible with modern two-stroke technology at substantially less everything except performance. You know it , a bigger displacement V6 or even better a V8 would rip that blower.

But still a great achievement for Merc

Man, would I love to see a Checkmate Pulsare 2400 with a 450R on the back! That would certainly bring the 24' Mate into the 100MPH realm...

I was thinking the same thing, but the price of the package is crazy to me.

Hmm, if Merc built a 4.6 two stroke what would the power, weight and price be?

Nearly 3 decades later and we're finally approaching the power to weight of a 300 drag, double the weight, 100 times as many moving parts, a gear case a foot wide that needs $5000 props. And people are impressed, I don't get it.

Just give CRT a ring $ee what a 3.5L will run you, then go over the warranty-should be another good source of people that Mercury can sell their new product to.

You never will...and you have already proven that- The days of small boat bay racing are all but done and outboard drag racing has been struggling for years. Maybe when you see F1 boats running four strokes it will give you a clear vision of todays world.

I believe that would depend on where they manufacture and produce the parts and the gouge they choose to lay down on the consumer to pad the profit margin. Has it been determined where the majority of parts in this blower motor are manufactured, country of origin not country of assembly? One OEM always tries to undercut the competition.

Probably never will. How easy was the 300 drag to use day-by-day? How long will it be reliable at wot? If the number doesn’t have three zeroes then it’s not even comparable.

    That speaks to pricing,

Is it possible that since a 3.2 makes a little over 300hp a 4.6 could do 450hp? What would it weigh?

So if Merc had just come out with a 450 hp 4.6 2 stroke would we be happy or complaining about the price and weight?

There is diminishing returns with cylinder displacement so i don’t think it would be proportional. I do think it’s pretty safe to say that they could build 4.3 liter v8 2-stroke at 400 hp and probably 575-600 lb. it would need the “gearcase a foot wide” as well if you want reliability. But I think what most neigh-sayers are missing is that price, weight, and power aren’t the only things that matter. Not even close. There was a time when I didn’t get that either.

The people that can afford the 450 don't give a damn. This is a baller motor for baller boats and they're going sell quite a few of them. I was hoping for a hopped up 3.4 in the line with a sporty but that would step on dicks amongst the engine line.
