I once wired up a 10HP 4 stroke kicker with no instructions that had slightly low oil. I switched the wires by mistake for the low engine oil light and the starter, but the engine worked perfectly for awhile. The key would actually be turning on the low oil light at start and the low oil signal would turn on the starter and turn off once it had oil pressure.
Well if you pushed the engine to full throttle the slightly low oil level and not new filter would cause oil to not drain back to the sump quickly enough and it would lose pressure and a month later this happened but I did not notice it until the starter and the power lines leading to it were on fire with smoke pouring out of the starter. Starter must have came on while engine was at full rpm and the cable and starter did not like that.
