Where can I buy books on "how to" build high performance outboards, etc?

I get so much great info from this forum, but I'm trying to find books /manuals on how to build or how to improve the performance of outboard engines... any make is fine. I have books at home on building hi-perf big block Chevys, small block Chevy builds, and how to build a big c.i. Chevy small block. Even a Jeep engine book. Is there anything out there in print for outboards? Thanks for any direction!

I don't think that you're going to find any better resource than the archives here. There aren't really any books in print that I know of. There's a 2 stroke tuning book by Gordon someone or another that's pretty good although it's geared towards bikes. The theory is the same. Earl Bentz put out a "Bass Boat Bible" in the early 80's but it's pretty generalized and all of the props and stuff he talks about are outdated. Your best bet is to learn to search this site effectively and then ask questions as they arise.

Sunoco web and some publications are good info on fuel and timing

if you know car performance converting to the two stroke side is simpler. Only change is tighter crankcase as it works like a really bad supercharger. Very simplistic statement (some two stroke diesel actually call it that unless they have a axzilary blower

umm that got of track theirs good books out but high performance is a liability so not many books specific to improvement

Hey, I've gotta hijack this thread for just a second....Is T-Rex still racing and building? I always enjoyed hanging out with him at the OBDA races in the early 2000's. He would tow 2 boats in tandem and race two classes. Anyone watching his awesome V4 Johnson launch his boat in the air and get him to 90+ half-track to beat many hi-dollar entries would recognize the man could build a motor! Gordon

the path the learn is get lots of blocks for the engine you want to mod and once you have filled a 55 gal drum with broken and melted aluminum you will be an expert
So start with small engine with cheap pistons

Gordon Jennings was the author of the Two Stroke Tuning book. I have it and the 2 stroke handbook by Bell, but those are bike and sled related. I've read those and studied many other articles and the one huge difference I see between the books and our outboard 2-strokes is the Exhaust. Every "built" or performance 2-stroke motorcycle or sled will have Expansion Chambers. Rotary valve controlled intakes and exhaust timing moves the torque curves around for optimum low, middle, and upper end performance on others - We haven't seen these employed on outboards. I haven't seen an expansion chamber on any production outboard ever... These are not expansion chambers......

He's not really messing with outboards anymore from what I understand. He's not able to drive a boat anymore so he's just working on cars from what I understand. Miss his posts here!

In 2000, he was driving/racing/building always with his crutches nearby. The man has spirit and determination for darn sure. I really enjoyed his story telling.....Thanks for the update. Gordon
